Chapter 9 - THE POLICE AT THE DOOR

The knock came hard.

Three times.

Mark opened the door.

Two officers stood outside.

“Evening. We received a report of a domestic disturbance.”

Margaret immediately transformed.

Her shoulders softened.

Her voice trembled.

“It was me.”

Claire watched in disbelief.

Margaret walked toward them like a frightened old woman.

“My daughter-in-law has been threatening me. She took my phone. Her sister came into my home and became aggressive.”

Rachel muttered, “Unbelievable.”

One officer raised a hand.

“Everyone stay calm.”

Claire stepped forward.

“My mother-in-law slapped me tonight.”

Margaret gasped.

“That’s a lie.”

Lily’s voice came from behind Claire.

“No, it’s not.”

The officers looked down.

Claire immediately lifted Lily.

One officer, a woman named Officer Brooks, crouched slightly.

“Hey there. What’s your name?”

“Lily.”

“Lily, are you okay?”

Lily nodded, then shook her head.

Claire kissed her hair.

Officer Brooks looked at Claire’s cheek.

The redness had darkened.

“Did someone hit you?”

“Yes.”

Margaret jumped in.

“She got in my face.”

Officer Brooks turned.

“That wasn’t my question.”

Margaret stopped.

Claire handed over the notebook.

“You need to see this.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Claire.”

She ignored him.

The second officer flipped through several pages.

His expression hardened.

“What is this?”

Margaret straightened.

“A health journal.”

“Why does it say ‘breakfast withheld’?”

“Discipline.”

Officer Brooks looked at Lily.

Claire felt Lily tighten against her chest.

“Ma’am,” Claire said, “the hospital documented food restriction tonight.”

That changed everything.

Officer Brooks looked at her partner.

“Hospital?”

Claire handed over the discharge papers.

“I took her in because she’s been having stomach pain.”

Margaret interrupted.

“This is absurd. No one has abused anyone.”

Rachel held up the phone.

“There are texts.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That phone was accessed without permission.”

The male officer looked at him.

“Sir, right now I’m more interested in whether a child was physically struck.”

Daniel paled.

Lily hid her face.

Officer Brooks asked Claire,

“Is there somewhere else you can stay tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Go there.”

Margaret protested.

“This is my home!”

“And she’s leaving.”

Officer Brooks took statements.

Photographs.

Names.

Then the officers separated everyone.

Daniel tried twice to speak privately with Claire.

She refused.

As Claire walked toward the car with Lily, Daniel followed her onto the porch.

“Claire.”

She kept walking.

“Please.”

She stopped.

He looked wrecked.

“I never wanted this.”

Claire stared at him.

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“You never wanted anything badly enough to stand up to your mother.”

“I love Lily.”

“Then why was she hungry?”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Claire opened the car door.

Before she could put Lily inside, Lily looked back at her father.

“Daddy?”

Daniel immediately crouched.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Lily looked at him for several seconds.

“Why did you tell Grandma not to give me food?”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Claire felt tears burn behind her eyes.

He reached for Lily.

She pulled away.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily whispered,

“I don’t want you to be my daddy tonight.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Claire buckled Lily into the car.

Then Officer Brooks approached.

“Mrs. Bell?”

Claire turned.

“We need to talk about something your daughter just told my partner.”

Claire’s pulse jumped.

“What?”

Officer Brooks lowered her voice.

“She said there’s a room in the basement where your mother-in-law used to make her sit alone.”

Claire stared.

“There’s no room in the basement.”

May you like

Officer Brooks looked toward the house.

“According to Lily, there is.”
