Chapter 2 - “HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN?”

Claire shut the front door.

Not because she was staying.

Because she needed an answer.

She lowered Lily gently onto the bench beside the entryway.

“Sweetheart, put your shoes on for me.”

Lily nodded.

Then Claire faced Daniel.

“How long?”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Claire—”

“How long have you known your mother was refusing Lily food?”

Margaret stepped forward.

“I have never starved that child.”

Claire’s eyes cut toward her.

“I wasn’t talking to you.”

Daniel sighed.

“She’s not starving her.”

“The pantry gets locked.”

“Mom has rules.”

“She’s five.”

“She snacks constantly.”

Claire stared at him.

“Are you hearing yourself?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

Lily sat quietly near the door, struggling with one shoelace.

Claire looked at her daughter’s small shoulders.

Suddenly she remembered dozens of tiny moments.

Lily asking for two breakfasts on weekends.

Lily hiding crackers in her bedroom.

Lily crying once when Claire threw away a stale granola bar she had found under her pillow.

Claire had assumed it was a weird kid habit.

Now her stomach twisted.

She looked at Lily.

“Baby, why did you keep crackers in your room?”

Daniel stiffened.

Margaret said quickly, “Claire, don’t interrogate her.”

Claire ignored her.

Lily stared at the floor.

“So I could eat after Grandma went to sleep.”

Claire closed her eyes.

For one second, she thought she might throw up.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“You knew?”

“I knew Mom thought she was overeating.”

“Did you know she was hiding food?”

“No.”

“Did you know she was being sent to bed hungry?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Claire walked toward him.

“You knew.”

“I knew there were consequences when she refused to follow rules.”

“What rules?”

Margaret jumped in.

“She grabs food without permission. She asks for seconds. She leaves crumbs. She needs structure.”

Claire laughed once.

It sounded ugly.

“She asks for seconds?”

Margaret lifted her chin.

“She’s getting heavy.”

Silence.

Claire’s face changed.

Daniel immediately said, “Mom.”

But it was too late.

Claire stepped so close to Margaret that only inches separated them.

“You have been restricting my five-year-old daughter’s food because you think she’s fat?”

“I said she needs healthy habits.”

“She weighs forty-one pounds.”

“She has your appetite.”

Claire’s hands began shaking.

Daniel moved between them.

“That’s enough.”

Claire stared at him.

“No. It’s not.”

He lowered his voice.

“Take Lily upstairs. We can discuss this tomorrow.”

Claire almost couldn’t believe him.

“Tomorrow?”

“You’re emotional.”

Claire smiled.

It frightened him more than screaming would have.

“I’m extremely clear right now.”

She went back to Lily.

“Shoes on?”

Lily nodded.

Claire picked up her keys.

Daniel blocked the door.

“No.”

“Move.”

“You’re not driving while you’re this upset.”

“Move.”

“Claire.”

She looked straight into his eyes.

“If you don’t move, I will call 911 and tell them your mother assaulted me while you prevented me from leaving.”

Margaret laughed.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

Claire pulled out her phone.

Margaret stopped laughing.

Daniel stepped aside.

Claire opened the door.

Cold night air rushed inside.

Then Lily tugged on her sleeve.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“My tummy hurts.”

Claire crouched immediately.

“Where?”

Lily pointed to the right side of her abdomen.

“When did it start?”

“A while ago.”

“How long?”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Grandma said not to tell you.”

May you like

Claire slowly looked over Lily’s head.

Margaret had gone pale.
