Chapter 1 - THE PLATE HIT THE WALL

The plate exploded against the kitchen wall before Claire even understood what she was seeing.

Mashed potatoes slid down the paint.

Chicken hit the floor.

And five-year-old Lily sat frozen at the dinner table, still holding an empty fork in her tiny hand.

Margaret stood over her.

“You’ve had enough.”

Claire stopped in the doorway.

“What did you just do?”

Her mother-in-law turned slowly.

Margaret Bell was sixty-two, perfectly dressed, perfectly composed, and somehow capable of making cruelty look like good manners.

“I said she’s done eating.”

Lily’s lower lip trembled.

“But I’m hungry.”

Margaret pointed at her.

“That whining is exactly why you don’t get more.”

Claire crossed the kitchen in three steps.

“She barely touched her dinner.”

“She ate enough.”

“She’s five.”

“And already spoiled.”

Claire felt heat rush into her face.

“You threw her food at the wall.”

Margaret gave a small shrug.

“She refused to listen.”

“No. She said she was hungry.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“You’re raising a weak child.”

Claire stared at her.

Then she looked across the table.

Daniel was sitting there.

Her husband.

Lily’s father.

He had watched the whole thing.

Claire expected him to stand.

Expected anger.

Expected anything.

Instead, Daniel cut another piece of steak.

“Daniel?”

He chewed.

Claire’s voice cracked.

“Are you seriously going to sit there?”

He finally looked up.

“Claire, don’t start.”

She almost laughed.

“Don’t start?”

Margaret folded her arms.

“Your wife has always been dramatic.”

Claire turned back toward her.

“Stay out of this.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

Then her hand moved.

Fast.

The slap cracked across Claire’s face.

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!”

Claire stumbled sideways and caught herself against the counter.

Her cheek burned.

The room went dead silent.

Slowly, Claire looked at Daniel.

This was the moment.

Surely this was the moment.

Daniel set his knife down.

Claire waited.

He wiped his mouth with a napkin.

Then he said, calmly,

“Mom said enough.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Not because of Margaret.

Because of him.

Lily began crying.

“Mommy
 I’m still hungry.”

Something inside Claire snapped clean in half.

She walked to Lily, lifted her from the chair, and grabbed her coat from the hook.

Daniel frowned.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

“Oh, come on.”

Claire pushed Lily’s arms into her coat sleeves.

“You watched your mother take food from our daughter.”

“She was disciplining her.”

“She slapped me.”

“You were yelling.”

Claire turned slowly.

“Listen to yourself.”

Margaret scoffed.

“Where are you going to go?”

Claire picked up her purse.

“Anywhere you aren’t.”

Daniel stood now.

“You’re not taking Lily.”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“Try to stop me.”

Lily wrapped both arms around Claire’s neck.

As Claire reached the front door, Lily whispered into her ear.

So softly Claire almost missed it.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Grandma does that when you’re at work too.”

Claire froze.

Her hand stayed on the doorknob.

Behind her, nobody moved.

Claire slowly turned her head.

“What did you say?”

Lily buried her face against Claire.

“She says I eat too much.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

“How many times?”

Lily didn’t answer.

Margaret did.

“Children exaggerate.”

Claire looked at her.

And for the first time that night, Margaret looked nervous.

Then Lily whispered one more sentence.

“Sometimes Grandma locks the pantry so I can’t get food.”

Claire stared at her husband.

Daniel looked away.

May you like

And that was when Claire realized something even worse.

He already knew.
