Chapter 7 - THE TEXT THREAD

Daniel reached for his motherâs phone.
âGive me that.â
Rachel pulled it away.
âNo.â
âItâs private property.â
âSo is a childâs body.â
Margaret lunged toward Rachel.
Claire stepped between them.
âEnough.â
Danielâs voice rose.
âYou canât go through her phone.â
Claire looked at him.
âWhy are you scared?â
âIâm not scared.â
âThen unlock it.â
Margaret laughed.
âAbsolutely not.â
Claireâs eyes stayed on Daniel.
âDo you want me to call the police right now?â
âFor what?â
âAssault. Child abuse. Financial deception. Pick one.â
Danielâs face reddened.
âYouâre out of control.â
Claire nodded slowly.
âMaybe. But Iâm also leaving with your daughter and a notebook full of evidence.â
That shut him up.
Rachel looked at the screen.
âItâs already unlocked.â
Margaretâs head snapped around.
âWhat?â
âYou didnât lock it after taking that call.â
Rachel tapped Messages.
Margaret rushed forward.
Mark moved between them.
âBack up.â
âI will have you arrested!â
âGo ahead.â
Rachel searched Danielâs name.
Found it.
Claire didnât want to look.
She had to.
The thread went back years.
At first it was ordinary.
Groceries.
Birthdays.
Pictures.
Then Claire saw Lilyâs name.
MARGARET: She refused eggs again. No breakfast.
DANIEL: Fine.
MARGARET: Asked for granola bar at 10:15.
DANIEL: Donât give in.
Claireâs hand flew to her mouth.
Another.
MARGARET: Claire keeps undermining me. Lily got seconds tonight.
DANIEL: Iâll talk to her.
Another.
A photograph.
Lilyâs little hand.
Red across the knuckles.
MARGARET: She stole bread after I told her no. Smacked her hand. She cried like I broke it.
Danielâs reply came two minutes later.
DANIEL: She needs to learn.
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel whispered, âI didnât understand how hard she hit her.â
Claire turned.
âYou saw the picture.â
âIt looked red.â
âYou said she needed to learn.â
âI was at work.â
âWhat difference does that make?â
âI thought Mom had handled it.â
Claireâs voice fell nearly to a whisper.
âShe did.â
Daniel looked destroyed now.
But Claire felt no pity.
Rachel kept scrolling.
âClaire.â
Something in her voice changed.
âWhat?â
âThereâs more.â
A text from six months earlier.
MARGARET: We need to talk about Claire. Sheâs becoming suspicious about the account.
DANIEL: She wonât find out.
Claire stared.
Rachel scrolled.
MARGARET: Move the savings before tax season.
DANIEL: Already done.
Claire looked at Daniel.
âWhat savings?â
He closed his eyes.
Claireâs voice sharpened.
âWhat savings, Daniel?â
Margaret sat down.
For the first time, she looked defeated.
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then Claireâs own phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
âHello?â
A manâs voice said,
âMrs. Bell? My name is Aaron Pike. Iâm an attorney representing Bell Family Holdings.â
Claire looked at Daniel.
The attorney continued.
âI believe you need to know that your husband filed paperwork three weeks ago preparing for a separation.â
Claire felt the floor disappear beneath her.
âHe did what?â
Daniel whispered,
âClaire, let me explain.â
May you like
But the attorney wasnât finished.
âAnd there appears to be an attempt to move marital assets before you could claim them.â
