Chapter 11 - THE PAPER HE SIGNED

Daniel sat at Rachelâs kitchen table the next morning.
Claire hadnât wanted him there.
But she needed answers.
Lily was upstairs watching cartoons with Mark.
Rachel sat beside Claire.
Daniel sat alone across from them.
Claire put her phone on the table.
âIâm recording this.â
Daniel nodded.
âFine.â
âWhat did you sign Friday?â
His face tightened.
âCustody paperwork.â
Rachel swore under her breath.
Claire stayed strangely calm.
âWhat kind?â
âA preliminary declaration.â
âFor what?â
âIn case we separated.â
âYou were going to ask for full custody?â
âNo.â
âDonât lie.â
âI was going to ask for primary custody.â
Claire stared.
âWhy?â
âMom convinced me you might take Lily and disappear.â
Claire almost laughed.
âYour mother locked her in a basement.â
âI know that now.â
âYou knew she was denying her food.â
âI know.â
âYou knew she hit her hand.â
âI know.â
âAnd somehow I was the dangerous parent?â
Daniel looked down.
âMom said if you got angry enough, youâd leave.â
Claireâs voice sharpened.
âShe was right.â
He flinched.
âThe difference is I left to protect Lily.â
âI understand that.â
âNo. Youâre starting to.â
Rachel leaned forward.
âWhat else did you sign?â
Daniel hesitated.
Claire noticed.
âDaniel.â
âA financial agreement.â
âWhat agreement?â
âTo move funds from Bell Family Holdings.â
âHow much?â
âFour hundred and eighty thousand dollars.â
Claire stopped breathing.
Rachel whispered, âJesus.â
Claire asked, âWhere?â
âAn account controlled by Mom.â
âWhy?â
âShe said it would protect the money if there was a divorce.â
âYou stole almost half a million dollars from our marriage?â
âIt wasnât all marital money.â
âHow much was mine?â
âI donât know.â
âGuess.â
Daniel stared at the table.
âMaybe a hundred and eighty.â
Claire felt numb.
One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
Money that could have paid for Lilyâs college.
Money Claire thought didnât exist.
âWhy were you preparing to divorce me?â
Daniel looked up.
âI wasnât.â
âYou were moving money and preparing custody documents.â
âI was preparing in case you left.â
âBecause your mother predicted I would.â
âYes.â
Claire laughed bitterly.
âShe created the conditions that would make me leave. Then helped you prepare for me leaving.â
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rachel said quietly,
âShe set you up.â
He nodded.
Claire looked at him.
âNo. Donât make him the victim.â
âIâm not.â
âGood.â
Daniel wiped his face.
âIâm going to fix the money.â
âYouâre going to return every dollar.â
âYes.â
âAnd youâre going to give my attorney every document.â
âYes.â
âYouâre not coming home.â
âI know.â
âYouâre not seeing Lily alone.â
His eyes snapped up.
âClaireââ
âNo.â
âIâm her father.â
âAnd last night she asked why you told Grandma not to feed her.â
His eyes filled.
âI can fix this.â
âThatâs not your decision.â
Silence.
Then Daniel reached into his coat.
Rachel immediately stiffened.
He pulled out a flash drive.
âI copied everything from Momâs office before the police sealed the room.â
Claire stared at it.
âWhatâs on there?â
âFinancial records. Text backups. Notes.â
âAnything about Lily?â
Daniel swallowed.
âYes.â
Claire took the drive.
âWhat?â
âThere are videos.â
Claireâs blood froze.
âWhat videos?â
Daniel looked ashamed.
âMom had cameras in the house.â
Claire stared at him.
âWhere?â
âKitchen. Hallway. Living room.â
âBedrooms?â
âI donât know.â
Claire stood so fast the chair scraped backward.
âYou donât know?â
âI didnât install them.â
âDid you know they existed?â
âSome of them.â
Rachel took the flash drive.
âWe need a lawyer before opening this.â
Claire nodded.
Then Daniel said,
âThereâs one more thing.â
Claire looked at him.
âWhat?â
âMy mother wasnât the only person who had access to the cameras.â
âWho else?â
Daniel whispered,
âMy sister.â
Claire went still.
Danielâs sister, Rebecca, lived three states away.
They hadnât spoken in nearly a year.
âWhy would Rebecca be watching my daughter?â
May you like
Daniel looked terrified.
âBecause Mom was sending her the footage.â
