Chapter 8 - HE WAS ALREADY PLANNING TO LEAVE

Claire walked outside because she couldn’t breathe inside that house anymore.

The cold air hit her face.

She gripped the phone.

“Why are you telling me this?”

Aaron Pike paused.

“Because I’m no longer comfortable with what I was asked to prepare.”

“What were you asked to prepare?”

“A restructuring of certain assets.”

“By Daniel?”

“By his mother, initially. Your husband later approved portions of it.”

Claire stared through the kitchen window.

Daniel was inside arguing with Rachel.

“How much money?”

“I can’t give you a complete figure without reviewing records.”

“Give me the incomplete figure.”

Another pause.

“Several hundred thousand dollars.”

Claire nearly dropped the phone.

“What?”

“Possibly more.”

“We don’t have several hundred thousand dollars.”

“I believe you do.”

Claire closed her eyes.

All those years.

Skipping vacations.

Buying Lily clothes on sale.

Working overtime at the dental clinic.

Driving a ten-year-old Honda because Daniel insisted they had to “build stability.”

Meanwhile money had been disappearing into his mother’s accounts.

“When was the separation supposed to happen?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he file for divorce?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly was he preparing?”

“Asset protection. Residence ownership clarification. Custody documentation.”

Claire’s stomach turned.

“Custody?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

Pike hesitated.

“There were notes regarding your alleged emotional instability.”

Claire went numb.

“My what?”

“Your mother-in-law documented incidents she believed could support an argument that you were an unfit parent.”

Claire laughed.

It sounded almost hysterical.

“What incidents?”

“Crying after your father died. Taking prescription sleep medication briefly. Missing work due to stress. Arguments witnessed in the home.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Her father had died two years earlier.

She had taken sleeping pills for ten days.

Daniel had held her in bed while she cried.

Now those nights had apparently become evidence.

“Was the plan to take Lily from me?”

“I can’t say what their ultimate intention was.”

Claire knew.

She looked through the window again.

Daniel saw her.

Their eyes met.

Claire ended the call.

She walked inside.

“Were you planning to leave me?”

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.”

“Were you preparing custody paperwork?”

His silence betrayed him.

“Daniel.”

“I was protecting myself.”

“From what?”

“From what you might do if we separated.”

Claire stared.

“You hadn’t even told me we were having problems.”

“We’ve had problems for years.”

“Because your mother lives in our house.”

“Her house.”

Claire flinched.

Daniel regretted it immediately.

“Claire, I didn’t mean—”

“No. Say it again.”

He didn’t.

She nodded.

“Right.”

Then she looked at Margaret.

“You’ve been planning this.”

Margaret folded her hands.

“I’ve been protecting my family.”

“From me?”

“From chaos.”

Claire’s voice shook.

“I gave you a granddaughter.”

“You gave Daniel responsibility he wasn’t ready for.”

Daniel snapped, “Mom, stop.”

Margaret ignored him.

“You were always too emotional. Too impulsive. Lily needs stability.”

Claire stared at her.

Then she understood.

The food journal.

The reports.

The constant criticism.

Margaret hadn’t simply been controlling Lily.

She had been building a story.

One where Claire was reckless.

Margaret was responsible.

And Daniel was the reasonable father trapped in the middle.

Claire looked at the notebook.

Then the phone.

Then Daniel.

“You were going to use my daughter against me.”

“No.”

“You were going to let your mother hurt her and then call me unstable when I reacted.”

“No!”

Claire walked to the door.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

She looked down at his hand.

“Let go.”

He released her.

Claire said quietly,

“You will never touch me again.”

Then Rachel’s phone buzzed.

She looked at it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Rachel looked toward the driveway.

“Claire
 there’s a police car outside.”

Daniel looked confused.

Margaret smiled.

“I called them.”

Claire stared at her.

May you like

Margaret stood.

“And I told them you threatened me.”
