Chapter 9 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

After the kidnapping, everything changed.

Julian refused to let Maya walk anywhere alone.

Maya hated it.

But she understood.

Because deep down...

She was scared too.

For days, she stayed at the penthouse.

Not as a maid.

Not as an employee.

As someone Julian was protecting.

But that created another problem.

Distance.

Maya felt trapped.

One night, she found Julian in his office.

Stacks of documents covered the desk.

"What's all this?"

He looked up.

"Your debt."

Her heart dropped.

"You investigated me?"

"No."

She stepped closer.

"Then what?"

"I asked Derek to help me understand what you were dealing with."

Maya looked at the papers.

Medical bills.

Loan agreements.

Interest statements.

Her entire hidden life spread across his desk.

"I told you I don't need you to fix everything."

Julian stood.

"I'm not trying to fix you."

"Then what?"

His voice softened.

"I'm trying to stand beside you."

That almost broke her.

Because nobody had ever said that.

Not like they meant it.

She picked up one of the papers.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She shook her head.

"I borrowed money because my mom was dying."

Silence.

"I thought I could pay it back."

Her voice trembled.

"But after she passed away, the interest kept growing."

Julian listened.

No judgment.

No interruption.

"I was ashamed."

Maya wiped her eyes.

"I didn't want you to look at me differently."

Julian stepped closer.

"Maya."

She looked up.

"I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who wanted something from me."

A pause.

"Money."

"Power."

"Protection."

His eyes softened.

"But you?"

He shook his head.

"You were the first person who never asked for anything."

Maya looked away.

"Because I didn't think I deserved anything."

The words hurt him.

More than any threat.

Before he could answer—

Derek rushed into the office.

"Julian."

They both turned.

Derek looked serious.

"We found something."

"What?"

Derek placed a file on the desk.

"Vincent Hale wasn't acting alone."

Julian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A familiar face.

Someone close.

Someone Maya trusted.

Her expression changed.

"No..."

Julian looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Maya slowly stepped back.

Because the person in the picture...

Was someone from her past.

Someone she thought was dead.

Someone who knew every secret she had ever hidden.

And underneath the photograph was one sentence:

"Ask Maya why she really came to the Croft family."

Julian looked at Maya.

For the first time...

Doubt entered the room.

And Maya realized the truth she feared most:

May you like

Her past had finally found her.
