Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE FEARLESS MAN STARTED WAITING

At 2:43 in the morning, Maya Torres walked into the penthouse…
And the most dangerous man in Chicago was standing in the dark, waiting for her.
Not with a gun.
Not with anger.
But with fear.
For the first time in his life, Julian Croft — the billionaire crime lord who had made powerful men beg for mercy — looked like a man who had almost lost something precious.
The elevator doors opened with a soft chime.
Maya stepped inside the luxury penthouse she cleaned every day, but somehow never felt like it belonged to her.
Her sneakers dangled from one hand.
Her apron was stained with flour.
The sweet smell of cinnamon and fresh bread still clung to her clothes.
She had spent six hours working at a bakery on Milwaukee Avenue.
Then, after her shift ended, she walked twenty minutes through the freezing Chicago streets because she needed to save every dollar she could.
Every step hurt.
Every breath felt heavy.
But she kept walking.
Because quitting was not an option.
She was twenty-three years old.
And she was already tired in a way no young woman should be.
The penthouse was completely silent.
Too silent.
Maya immediately knew something was wrong.
Then she saw him.
Julian Croft stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back facing her.
The Chicago skyline illuminated his silhouette.
He looked like the man everyone feared.
Cold.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
But tonight, something was different.
"Maya."
Her body froze.
She slowly looked up.
"Julian..."
He turned around.
His eyes immediately went to her exhausted face.
"Do you know what time it is?"
She glanced at the clock on the wall.
"2:43."
His jaw tightened.
"Exactly."
She placed her sneakers down.
"My phone died."
"Convenient."
The accusation was quiet.
That made it worse.
Maya looked away.
"It's true."
Julian walked closer.
He wasn't yelling.
He never needed to.
Men twice his size had confessed crimes with only a look from him.
"I have been standing here since eleven."
Maya blinked.
"Three hours?"
"Almost four."
His voice dropped.
"Wondering if you were hurt."
A pause.
"Wondering if someone took you."
Another step closer.
"Wondering why the woman living in my home keeps disappearing and refuses to tell me why."
Maya swallowed.
Because the truth was sitting inside her wallet.
Three envelopes.
Three warnings.
Three reminders that her life was falling apart.
FINAL NOTICE.
PAST DUE.
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED.
She wanted to tell him.
She wanted to say:
I am not avoiding you.
I am drowning.
She wanted to explain the hospital bills after her mother's illness.
The loan.
The impossible interest.
The second job.
The nights where she cried silently because she didn't know how she would survive another month.
But she couldn't.
Not yet.
Because Julian Croft was a man who owned everything.
And Maya Torres was a woman who felt like she had nothing.
"I will explain tomorrow," she whispered.
Julian stared at her.
"You said that last week."
"I know."
"And the week before."
Her eyes lowered.
"But tomorrow will be different."
Something moved in his expression.
Disappointment.
Not anger.
That hurt more.
He turned toward his bedroom.
At the doorway, he stopped.
"I don't know what you're running from, Maya."
He looked back.
"But I know you're running."
The words stayed between them.
"I can't help you if you won't let me know what I'm fighting."
Then he walked away.
The bedroom door closed.
Maya stood alone.
May you like
Holding the sneakers she carried home every night.
And for the first time, she wondered if hiding her problems was actually destroying the one person who wanted to protect her.
