Chapter 2 - THE SECRET SHE COULDN'T SAY

Morning arrived too quickly.
Maya barely slept.
She spent most of the night staring at the ceiling, replaying Julian's words.
I can't help you if you won't let me know what I'm fighting.
She hated that he was right.
But admitting she needed help felt impossible.
She had spent years surviving alone.
Her mother always told her:
"Never let the world see you break, Maya."
So she learned how to smile while hurting.
How to say "I'm fine" when she wasn't.
How to carry everything herself.
At 7:30 AM, she stood in the kitchen preparing Julian's coffee.
The penthouse was quiet.
Almost peaceful.
Until Julian walked in.
His hair was still damp from his shower.
His white shirt was open slightly at the collar.
He looked less like a feared businessman and more like a tired man who had not slept.
Maya placed the coffee in front of him.
"Thank you."
She nodded.
Silence.
Then—
"We need to talk."
Her fingers tightened around the towel in her hand.
"Can I drink coffee first?"
Julian almost smiled.
Almost.
"That depends."
"On what?"
"Whether you're finally going to tell me the truth."
The smile disappeared.
Maya looked down.
She wanted to speak.
She really did.
But every word felt impossible.
How do you explain poverty to someone who has never worried about money?
How do you explain fear to someone who has spent his entire life making others afraid?
"Tonight," she said.
Julian's eyes changed.
"Tonight?"
"I promise."
He stared at her.
For a moment, she thought he would walk away.
Instead, he quietly said:
"Okay."
The elevator suddenly opened.
Derek Vance stepped inside.
Julian's closest friend and right-hand man.
He looked at both of them.
Then immediately turned around.
"Nope."
Maya blinked.
"What?"
Derek pointed toward the elevator.
"I walked into something."
Julian sighed.
"Derek."
"I will come back when nobody is emotionally destroying each other."
The doors closed.
For the first time that morning, Maya almost laughed.
Almost.
But then Julian's phone rang.
And the moment disappeared.
At 4:00 PM, Maya was folding towels in the guest room when her phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her heart sank.
Rosa.
The bakery manager.
She already knew.
"Maya, I'm sorry. Someone called in sick. Can you cover the closing shift?"
Maya closed her eyes.
Tonight.
She had promised Julian tonight.
But then she opened her wallet.
The envelopes were still there.
The payment was due in forty-eight hours.
She was still short two hundred dollars.
Two hundred dollars between her and losing everything.
Her fingers hovered over the phone.
Then she typed:
I'll be there.
She stared at the message.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Not because she wanted to cry.
Because she was tired of being strong.
She grabbed her coat.
She walked toward the elevator.
Then stopped.
She turned around.
She grabbed a piece of paper.
She wanted to write something.
Anything.
"I'm sorry."
"I'll explain."
"I didn't mean to hurt you."
But every sentence sounded like another excuse.
The paper remained empty.
She left.
Derek was waiting near the elevator.
He immediately noticed.
"You're leaving."
Maya avoided his eyes.
"Yes."
"Julian knows?"
"No."
Derek sighed.
"Maya."
"Please don't."
"He cares about you."
Her expression hardened.
"Don't say that."
"Why?"
"Because people like Julian Croft don't care about people like me."
Derek looked at her.
"You really believe that?"
She didn't answer.
Derek stepped closer.
"I have worked beside him for ten years."
A pause.
"He doesn't wait for people."
Another pause.
"He doesn't worry about people."
His voice lowered.
"But last night, he stood in the dark for almost four hours waiting for you."
Maya looked away.
"That doesn't change anything."
May you like
But deep down...
She knew it did.
