Chapter 4 - THE ENEMY WHO KNEW HER NAME

Maya Torres never noticed the black SUV following her through the streets of Chicago.
She was too tired.
Too focused on getting home.
Her fingers were frozen around the strap of her bag, her shoulders heavy from another twelve-hour day.
The city around her moved fast.
Cars passed.
People laughed outside restaurants.
Couples walked hand in hand beneath streetlights.
Everyone looked like they belonged somewhere.
Everyone except her.
Maya reached the corner near the bus stop and checked her phone.
Three missed calls.
All from Julian.
Her heart sank.
She knew she should call him back.
She knew she owed him an explanation.
But fear stopped her.
What would she even say?
"Sorry, I have been secretly working another job because I am drowning in debt?"
"Sorry, I was too embarrassed to admit that the woman cleaning your penthouse can't even afford her own life?"
She put the phone away.
Not tonight.
Tomorrow.
She always said tomorrow.
The black SUV slowly moved closer.
Inside, a man watched her carefully.
His name was Vincent Hale.
And unlike Julian Croft, Vincent did not build power through respect.
He built it through fear.
He had spent years trying to find a weakness in Julian.
A crack in the armor.
A reason the untouchable man could finally fall.
And tonight…
He found one.
A young woman carrying groceries and exhaustion.
A woman Julian cared about.
Vincent smiled.
"So that's her."
The driver glanced at him.
"Julian Croft's maid?"
Vincent shook his head.
"No."
He looked through the window.
"Not just his maid."
A pause.
"She's the reason he is vulnerable."
When Maya finally arrived at the penthouse, it was almost 1:00 AM.
She quietly opened the door.
She expected darkness.
Instead, the living room lights were on.
Julian was sitting on the couch.
Waiting.
Again.
Maya stopped.
"You're still awake?"
His eyes lifted.
"Are you surprised?"
She looked away.
"Julian..."
"No."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Tonight, you are going to listen."
Maya froze.
She had never heard him sound like that.
Not angry.
Not cruel.
Determined.
He stood.
"How long?"
Her brows furrowed.
"What?"
"How long have you been working two jobs?"
Silence.
The question hit her like a wall.
Her face changed.
And Julian saw it.
The answer.
"Months."
Maya looked down.
"I didn't want you to know."
"Why?"
She laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"Because I knew what you would think."
Julian stepped closer.
"And what would I think?"
She looked at him.
"That I am a mess."
His expression changed.
"Maya..."
"That I can't even manage my own life."
Her voice cracked.
"That I am just the poor girl who cleans your house."
Julian stared at her.
For the first time, he saw something he had missed.
She wasn't hiding money problems.
She was hiding pain.
"You really think that is what I see when I look at you?"
Maya didn't answer.
Julian lowered his voice.
"I see the woman who wakes up before everyone else."
A pause.
"The woman who takes care of this entire place."
Another pause.
"The woman who smiles even when she is exhausted."
His eyes softened.
"I see you."
Maya looked away quickly.
Because that was more dangerous than anger.
Kindness.
She could handle people hurting her.
She didn't know how to handle someone caring.
"I can't accept your help."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want to owe you."
Julian went quiet.
Then he said:
"You already do."
Her eyes widened.
"Not because of money."
He stepped closer.
"Because you matter to me."
The words stayed in the room.
Before Maya could answer, Julian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
Danger.
"What is it?"
Derek's voice came through.
"Julian..."
A pause.
"You need to see this."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Derek lowered his voice.
"Someone has been asking questions about Maya."
The room went silent.
Maya felt a chill.
"Who?"
Derek answered.
"Vincent Hale."
Julian's face hardened.
May you like
Because that name meant one thing.
War.
