Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO STOPPED FEARING DEATH

The abandoned warehouse sat near the edge of Chicago.
Dark.
Empty.
Forgotten.
Exactly the kind of place Vincent Hale liked.
Julian stepped inside alone.
No guards.
No weapons visible.
Just himself.
The sound of his footsteps echoed.
Then—
"Impressive."
Vincent appeared from the shadows.
"You actually came."
Julian's eyes searched the room.
"Where is Maya?"
Vincent smiled.
"No greeting?"
"Where is she?"
Vincent laughed.
"You're not even pretending."
Julian stepped closer.
"You have five seconds."
Vincent raised an eyebrow.
"And if I don't?"
Julian's expression didn't change.
"Then you find out why people fear me."
For the first time, Vincent saw it.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Something worse.
A man with nothing left to lose.
"Still the same Julian."
Vincent shook his head.
"You think intimidation solves everything."
"No."
Julian stared at him.
"But it solves you."
Before Vincent could respond, a voice came from behind them.
"Julian!"
He turned.
Maya.
She was standing near the doorway.
Her face pale.
Her eyes filled with relief.
But the moment Julian saw her wrists...
Everything changed.
The room became colder.
"Maya."
She ran toward him.
He caught her immediately.
For one second, the powerful man disappeared.
There was only a man holding someone he thought he lost.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Julian shook his head.
"Don't."
"I should have told you."
"Not now."
"I caused this."
"No."
His voice became firm.
"You did not cause this."
Vincent watched silently.
And he hated what he saw.
Because he wanted Julian angry.
He wanted him reckless.
Instead, Maya made him human.
"Beautiful."
Vincent clapped slowly.
"Truly."
Julian turned.
"You used her to get to me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Vincent smiled.
"Because everyone knows Julian Croft cannot be beaten."
He looked at Maya.
"Unless someone gives him a reason to care."
Maya stepped forward.
"You're sick."
Vincent laughed.
"No."
He looked at Julian.
"I am realistic."
"You built an empire because you trusted nobody."
A pause.
"Then she came along."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"And now?"
Vincent smiled.
"Now everyone knows you have something to lose."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
Sirens.
Vincent's expression changed.
"What?"
Derek's voice echoed from outside.
"Julian!"
Vincent looked toward the door.
"You brought backup."
Julian looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"I brought justice."
The police entered minutes later.
But Vincent was already gone.
A hidden exit.
A planned escape.
Julian held Maya close while officers searched the building.
Derek approached.
"We lost him."
Julian nodded.
But he wasn't focused on Vincent.
He was focused on Maya.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
"I'm okay."
He looked at her wrists.
"No, you're not."
Maya looked down.
Then whispered:
"I was so scared."
Julian's expression softened.
"Me too."
The confession surprised her.
"You?"
He looked away.
"I have faced men with guns."
A pause.
"I have walked into places where everyone wanted me dead."
His eyes met hers.
"But tonight..."
His voice became quiet.
"I was afraid."
Maya stared at him.
"Because of me?"
May you like
Julian didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
