Chapter 13 - THE FAMILY SECRET THAT BURIED THE TRUTH

Julian Croft had spent his entire life believing his father was untouchable.

A brilliant businessman.

A respected man.

A legend.

But now he was staring at a photograph that showed a different reality.

Richard Croft standing beside Adrian Torres.

The same Adrian who disappeared eight years ago.

The same Adrian who knew the truth about Maya's mother.

Maya looked at Julian.

"Say something."

But Julian couldn't.

For the first time, words failed him.

Because if his father was responsible...

Then everything Julian had built was connected to a lie.

Derek broke the silence.

"We need to find Richard."

Julian nodded.

"Not yet."

Derek looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because if my father has been hiding something for eight years..."

Julian looked at the photograph.

"He will know we're coming."

Maya stepped closer.

"Julian."

He looked at her.

"What if he really did it?"

The question hurt.

Not because he didn't believe her.

Because he was afraid he did.

"I don't know."

It was the first time Maya heard him admit uncertainty.

The man who always had answers.

The man who always controlled the room.

Was lost.

And somehow that made her trust him more.

That night, Julian went alone to his father's old office.

The room had not changed.

The same books.

The same expensive furniture.

The same portrait of the Croft family.

A perfect image.

A perfect lie.

Julian opened the hidden safe behind the painting.

He knew the code.

His birthday.

His father had always said:

"Family is the only thing worth protecting."

But inside the safe was not love.

It was evidence.

Old documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

And one file.

MAYA TORRES.

Julian froze.

His hands tightened.

His father had known about her.

Before she ever entered his home.

Before she ever cleaned his penthouse.

Before they ever met.

He opened the file.

Inside were reports about Maya's family.

Her mother's illness.

Adrian's disappearance.

The debt.

Everything.

Someone had been watching her for years.

Then he found the final document.

A payment order.

Signed by Richard Croft.

The amount was enough to silence anyone.

Julian's face turned cold.

His father hadn't caused the illness.

But he had paid someone.

He had covered something up.

A voice came from behind him.

"I wondered how long it would take you."

Julian slowly turned.

Richard Croft stood in the doorway.

Older.

Calm.

Not surprised.

"Why?"

The question came quietly.

Richard sighed.

"You always were too emotional."

Julian stared at him.

"Why did you watch Maya's family?"

Richard looked at the file.

"Because her mother found something she shouldn't have."

"What?"

A pause.

"The truth about how our empire started."

Julian stepped forward.

"You destroyed her life."

"No."

Richard's expression hardened.

"I protected this family."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"By ruining innocent people?"

Richard looked at him.

"You sound like your mother."

The room went silent.

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"What did you say?"

Richard smiled slightly.

"She also believed morality mattered more than power."

A chill moved through Julian.

Because he suddenly understood.

His father wasn't afraid of the truth.

He was afraid of losing control.

Then Richard said the words that changed everything.

"Maya Torres was never supposed to survive."
