Chapter 8 - The Room Nobody Knew Existed

Charlotte held the silver key.
Her fingers trembled.
Because she remembered it.
She was twelve years old.
Her mother gave her the necklace.
And said:
"Some things are more valuable because nobody knows they exist."
Charlotte thought it was just a childhood memory.
Now...
It was a warning.
Alexander looked at her.
"What does it open?"
Charlotte stared at the key.
"I don't know."
Marcus answered:
"Your mother built a private archive inside Solmere."
Adrian suddenly stepped forward.
"Stop talking."
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time...
Adrian looked desperate.
Charlotte noticed.
The secret was bigger than she imagined.
"Where is the archive?"
Marcus looked toward the wall.
"Behind the original foundation room."
Charlotte frowned.
"There is no room there."
Marcus smiled.
"Exactly."
They moved through the hotel.
Past the luxurious hallways.
Past the rooms filled with expensive decorations.
Until they reached an old section of the building.
A place most employees never visited.
Charlotte touched the wall.
"Nothing."
Marcus pointed.
"Look closer."
She noticed a small mark.
A symbol.
The same symbol her mother used on childhood letters.
Charlotte inserted the key.
The wall clicked.
Slowly...
A hidden door opened.
Everyone froze.
Inside was a small room.
Dust covered the shelves.
Old files filled every corner.
And in the center...
A single box.
Charlotte walked toward it.
Her mother's handwriting was on the top.
"For Charlotte."
Her breathing stopped.
She opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Recordings.
And one letter.
She opened it.
"My dear Charlotte..."
Her mother's voice played from a hidden device.
"If you are hearing this..."
A pause.
"Then I am gone."
Charlotte covered her mouth.
The room became silent.
"I need you to know something."
"Your uncle Adrian was not the only person who betrayed us."
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
His face turned pale.
Her mother's voice continued.
"The person who destroyed our family..."
"Is someone you trust more than anyone."
Charlotte looked at Alexander.
Then Marcus.
Then Adrian.
The recording ended.
But one final file appeared.
A video.
Charlotte pressed play.
The screen showed her mother.
May you like
And sitting beside her...
Was Alexander Cross.
