Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden in the Shadows

Charlotte stared at Adrian.
For the first time in months...
She felt something stronger than anger.
Fear.
Not for herself.
For the truth.
Because if her mother's death was connected to the same people who stole her empire...
Then the enemy had been inside her family all along.
"Who helped you?"
Charlotte repeated.
Adrian remained silent.
A dangerous smile appeared on his face.
"You still think you are in control."
Charlotte stepped closer.
"No."
Her voice was calm.
"I know I am."
Adrian laughed.
"You walk into this building after disappearing for months."
"You expose yourself."
"You accuse people without proof."
"And you think you have won?"
Charlotte looked at the folder in her hands.
"I have proof."
Adrian's expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Charlotte saw it.
He was worried.
She closed the folder.
"Where is the original ownership file?"
Adrian looked away.
"You will never find it."
Charlotte noticed his reaction.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
"You destroyed it."
"No."
"Then why are you afraid?"
Adrian said nothing.
Before Charlotte could continue...
The office lights suddenly went out.
The entire room became dark.
Alexander immediately stepped in front of Charlotte.
"Stay behind me."
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone was approaching.
Charlotte held her breath.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Wearing a black suit.
His face was hidden by the darkness.
Adrian looked surprised.
"You came."
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
"You know him?"
The stranger smiled.
"Unfortunately..."
He looked at Charlotte.
"I know you very well."
Charlotte narrowed her eyes.
"Who are you?"
The man stepped into the light.
And Charlotte froze.
Because she recognized him.
Not personally.
But from the photographs.
From old company meetings.
From her mother's documents.
The man standing in front of her was Marcus Vane.
The former financial advisor of Solmere.
The man who disappeared the same week her mother died.
Alexander whispered:
"Impossible."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Why?"
May you like
Alexander's face turned serious.
"Because Marcus Vane died six months ago."
