Chapter 7 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody moved.
The room felt frozen.
Charlotte stared at Marcus.
The man who was officially dead.
Standing in front of her.
Alive.
Adrian looked between them.
"Now you understand."
Charlotte slowly turned toward her uncle.
"Understand what?"
Adrian smiled.
"That you are fighting people far more powerful than you realize."
Charlotte refused to show fear.
"People who fake deaths?"
Marcus stepped forward.
"You have your mother's courage."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Don't mention my mother."
Marcus stopped.
Because her voice carried pain.
Real pain.
"You helped them."
Marcus said nothing.
Charlotte's eyes sharpened.
"Did you help kill her?"
The silence answered before he did.
Alexander moved forward.
"Answer her."
Marcus looked at Charlotte.
"I didn't kill Evelyn."
Charlotte stared.
"Then why did you disappear?"
Marcus looked down.
"Because I found out who did."
Everyone became silent.
Charlotte felt her heartbeat increase.
"Who?"
Marcus looked at Adrian.
Then back at Charlotte.
"Someone closer than you think."
Adrian's face changed.
"Enough."
Marcus ignored him.
"Your mother discovered financial crimes inside Solmere."
Charlotte listened carefully.
"She planned to expose everyone."
"She had evidence."
"Names."
"Accounts."
"Transactions."
Charlotte whispered:
"The hidden files."
Marcus nodded.
"But someone found out."
Charlotte clenched her fists.
"And they killed her."
Marcus looked away.
"I arrived too late."
A painful silence filled the room.
Charlotte wanted to believe him.
But she had learned one thing.
Everyone had a story.
Everyone had an excuse.
"Where is the evidence?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Your mother hid it."
"Where?"
Marcus answered:
"Somewhere only you could access."
Charlotte frowned.
"I don't know where."
Marcus smiled sadly.
"Yes, you do."
He reached into his pocket.
And placed something on the desk.
A small silver key.
Charlotte immediately recognized it.
Her mother's necklace.
The necklace she thought was lost forever.
Marcus whispered:
"Your mother never trusted anyone."
May you like
A pause.
"Except you."
