Chapter 9 - The Plan Behind The Marriage

I read the letter again.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
Julian didn’t accidentally hurt me.
He didn’t suddenly become cruel.
This had been planned.
Before the wedding.
Before the vows.
Before I moved into his house.
I looked at Claire.
“How long have you had this?”
“Five years.”
“Why didn’t you expose him?”
She smiled sadly.
“Because nobody believed me.”
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“They will believe me.”
Claire looked at me.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Because this time…”
“They chose the wrong woman.”
When I returned home, I didn’t tell anyone immediately.
Not even my parents.
Because I needed time.
I needed a strategy.
Julian thought this was a marriage problem.
He didn’t realize it had become something bigger.
A battle.
The next morning, Victoria called.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“Elena.”
Her voice sounded sweet.
Too sweet.
“We need to talk.”
“About what?”
“You and Julian.”
I remained silent.
She continued.
“He misses you.”
I almost laughed.
“Does he?”
“Yes.”
“He realizes he made mistakes.”
I looked at the letter sitting beside me.
“No.”
“He realizes he lost control.”
Silence.
Then her voice became colder.
“You’re becoming difficult.”
I smiled.
“That sounds familiar.”
Victoria ignored the comment.
“Come to the house.”
“Why?”
“So we can fix this.”
I looked out the window.
“Fine.”
“Tomorrow.”
The next evening…
I returned to the Whitmore mansion.
The same place where I had entered as a bride.
The same place where I had left fourteen hours later.
But this time…
I wasn’t entering as family.
I was entering as someone who knew the truth.
Julian was waiting in the living room.
He looked different.
Tired.
Angry.
Frustrated.
But not sorry.
“Elena.”
I sat down.
“Julian.”
He studied me.
“You look different.”
I smiled.
“Maybe because I’m seeing clearly now.”
His expression tightened.
“I want to fix this.”
“No.”
“I want my wife back.”
“You never wanted a wife.”
“You wanted control.”
He stood up.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I placed the letter on the table.
Immediately…
His face changed.
Not much.
But enough.
Enough for me to know.
He recognized it.
“Where did you get that?”
I leaned back.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You didn’t ask what it was.”
“You asked where I got it.”
The room became silent.
Julian looked toward the hallway.
Victoria appeared.
And the moment she saw the letter…
Her face lost all color.
I slowly placed it in front of them.
“Do you want to explain?”
Neither spoke.
So I opened it.
And read the first line aloud.
“Mother, I found the perfect woman to replace Claire.”
Julian’s eyes hardened.
Victoria’s hands began shaking.
And then…
For the first time…
They looked afraid.
Because they finally understood.
The woman they tried to control…
May you like
Had discovered the entire plan.
To be continued...
