Chapter 6 - The First Crack In The Empire

Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The recording continued.
Julian’s voice.
Victoria’s voice.
Their cruelty.
Their arrogance.
Their confidence that I would stay silent.
I watched them listen.
And for the first time…
They understood.
Their biggest mistake was believing I had nothing.
Julian reached for the device.
I moved it away.
“Don’t.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You recorded me?”
“Yes.”
“You planned this?”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You gave me the reason.”
Victoria stood up.
“You’re trying to destroy my son.”
I looked at her calmly.
“No.”
“I’m stopping him from destroying me.”
She pointed at me.
“You don’t understand the power you’re challenging.”
I smiled.
“That’s the difference between us.”
“You think power comes from money.”
“It doesn’t.”
“What does it come from?”
“Knowing the truth.”
The lawyer beside Julian whispered something to him.
His expression changed.
“What?”
The lawyer looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Whitmore…”
“Say it.”
“The recording is legally significant.”
Julian stared at him.
“You’re telling me she has evidence?”
The lawyer nodded.
“Yes.”
“And if this becomes public…”
He stopped.
But everyone understood.
Julian’s perfect image would collapse.
Victoria looked terrified.
Not because she cared about me.
Because she cared about reputation.
“What do you want?”
Julian finally asked.
I looked at him.
“I want the truth.”
“That’s all.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You think people care about truth?”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Eventually.”
Julian leaned back.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No.”
“I made one mistake.”
“What?”
I stood up.
“I trusted you.”
Then I walked away.
But outside the building…
Something unexpected happened.
A woman was waiting near the entrance.
She looked nervous.
Like she had been fighting with herself for a long time.
“Elena?”
I stopped.
“Who are you?”
She looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
“My name is Rachel.”
“I used to work for Julian’s family.”
I frowned.
“Why are you telling me this?”
Her hands shook.
“Because what happened to you…”
“Has happened before.”
The world suddenly became quiet.
“What do you mean?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Julian has done this before.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
She handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman I had never seen before.
Standing beside Julian.
Wearing a wedding dress.
My fingers tightened around the picture.
Rachel whispered:
“You were not his first wife.”
I looked up.
“What did you say?”
Rachel stepped back.
“He has a secret.”
“A secret his family buried years ago.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving me standing there.
Holding proof that my fourteen-hour marriage…
May you like
Was built on a lie much bigger than I ever imagined.
To be continued...
