Chapter 5 - The Woman They Wanted Everyone To Hate

The internet moved faster than truth.
By noon…
My name was everywhere.
Not because people knew what happened.
Because Julian made sure they knew only his version.
The article described me as unstable.
Difficult.
Ungrateful.
A woman who walked away from a wealthy husband after receiving everything she wanted.
Everything was carefully written.
Carefully edited.
Carefully designed.
To make me look selfish.
My mother placed the phone down.
“Elena…”
“I know.”
My father looked furious.
“This family is trying to destroy your reputation.”
I looked at the screen.
A photo from our wedding appeared.
Julian smiling.
Me standing beside him.
Everyone believed it was a perfect moment.
Nobody knew that fourteen hours later…
That same man would throw a dirty towel at my face.
“I don’t understand.”
My mother whispered.
“How can someone change so quickly?”
I looked outside.
“Maybe he didn’t change.”
“Maybe he just stopped pretending.”
That afternoon…
Julian’s lawyer contacted mine.
They wanted a meeting.
I agreed.
Not because I wanted to return.
Because I wanted to know how far they planned to go.
The meeting took place in a private office downtown.
Julian arrived wearing the same confident expression.
Victoria sat beside him.
Two lawyers surrounded them.
They looked prepared.
They looked powerful.
They looked certain.
Julian placed a folder on the table.
“We can end this peacefully.”
I looked at the folder.
“What does peacefully mean to you?”
He pushed it toward me.
“A public apology.”
I stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“You admit you overreacted.”
“You return home.”
“And we move forward.”
I almost laughed.
“You want me to apologize?”
Julian leaned forward.
“You embarrassed my family.”
I looked at Victoria.
Then back at him.
“No.”
“I protected myself.”
Victoria sighed dramatically.
“This is exactly the problem.”
“You’re too stubborn.”
I looked at her.
“And you’re too comfortable hurting people.”
The lawyers exchanged looks.
Because they knew.
This conversation was not going the way Julian expected.
Then Julian said something that revealed everything.
“You should remember who you married.”
I became silent.
Because there it was.
The real Julian.
The man behind the mask.
“You think your last name makes you untouchable?”
I asked.
He smiled.
“It helps.”
I nodded slowly.
“Good.”
“Then you won’t mind when everyone learns the truth.”
His smile faded.
“What truth?”
I opened my bag.
And placed a small recording device on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Julian’s face changed.
Victoria stopped breathing.
Because they realized something.
The morning I was humiliated…
I had recorded everything.
Every word.
Every insult.
Every command.
The room became silent.
Then I pressed play.
Julian’s own voice filled the room.
“You’re not my wife.”
“You’re a maid now.”
May you like
“Earn your keep.”
The color disappeared from his face.
