Chapter 2 - The Wife Who Walked Away

Julian stood frozen halfway up the stairs.

His confident expression disappeared.

His eyes moved from my face…

To my suitcase.

Then to the backpack on my shoulder.

“What are you doing?”

His voice was no longer arrogant.

It was confused.

I continued walking.

The wheels of my suitcase moved across the carpet.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Victoria appeared behind him.

“What is happening?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

Julian stepped down.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

“Yes?”

“Put the suitcase away.”

His tone sounded like an order.

Not a request.

I smiled.

“I was thinking about what you said.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What did I say?”

I looked at him.

“You said I couldn’t be a freeloader.”

Victoria frowned.

“So?”

“So you were right.”

I continued.

“I shouldn’t eat your food.”

“I shouldn’t stay in your house.”

“I shouldn’t depend on someone who thinks marriage means ownership.”

Julian’s face changed.

“Careful.”

That one word told me everything.

He wasn’t sorry.

He was angry that I was resisting.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You’re overreacting.”

I looked at her.

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

“You were asked to help around the house.”

“You weren’t attacked.”

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You watched your son throw a dirty towel at my face.”

“And your concern is that I’m overreacting?”

Victoria’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

Julian grabbed his phone.

“This is ridiculous.”

“You’re acting emotional.”

I looked at him.

“Yesterday, you called me the love of your life.”

“Today, you called me a freeloader.”

“What changed?”

Silence.

Julian had no answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

He believed I was trapped.

I reached the front door.

Victoria’s voice became louder.

“You cannot leave.”

I turned around.

“Why?”

“Because you’re my daughter-in-law.”

I smiled.

“Was.”

Her face turned red.

“Excuse me?”

I opened the door.

“I said was.”

The cold air touched my face.

For the first time that morning…

I felt like I could breathe.

Julian stepped forward.

“You’re really doing this?”

“Yes.”

“After one argument?”

I looked at him.

“This wasn’t an argument.”

“This was a warning.”

“A warning?”

“Yes.”

“You showed me exactly what my future would look like.”

His expression hardened.

“You think you can just walk away?”

I held the door handle.

“I already did.”

Then I stepped outside.

The door closed behind me.

And for the first time in fourteen hours…

I was free.

But I didn’t know yet…

Julian wasn’t going to let me leave quietly.

Three hours later…

My phone started ringing.

Julian.

I ignored it.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Then a message appeared.

“Come back.”

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

“You misunderstood everything.”

Then another.

“My mother was upset.”

Another.

“We need to talk.”

I almost laughed.

Because that was Julian’s favorite word.

Talk.

Whenever he wanted control.

Whenever he wanted me to forgive.

Whenever he wanted me to forget.

But this time…

I wasn’t the woman who married him yesterday.

I was the woman who escaped him today.

Then another message appeared.

And this one made my blood run cold.

“You forgot something important in the house.”

I frowned.

I checked my bags.

Passport.

Money.

Documents.

Everything was there.

Then Julian sent one final message.

“You forgot your wedding ring.”

I looked down.

The diamond ring was still on my finger.

But beneath his message was another sentence.

May you like

A sentence that changed everything.

“Your ring belongs to my family now.”
