Chapter 5 - THE DAUGHTER WHO CARRIED ANOTHER MAN’S NAME

The name repeated in my mind.

Renata Hale.

Not Salgado.

Not my name.

Not the name I gave my daughter.

Hale.

The same name as the man who betrayed me.

Victor Hale.

I stared at the screen of my phone.

The birth certificate information was still there.

A digital copy.

A government record.

A piece of paper that had just destroyed everything I believed about my own family.

“No.”

The word escaped my mouth.

Quietly.

Almost like I was trying to convince myself.

“No.”

My contact remained silent.

He knew better than to interrupt me.

For years, I had faced men with weapons.

Men who wanted my money.

Men who wanted my power.

Men who wanted me dead.

None of them ever managed to break me.

But a piece of information about my own daughter…

That was different.

“Check it again.”

My voice was cold.

“Check every record.”

“We already did.”

“Check again.”

A pause.

“Boss…”

“I said check again.”

The line went silent.

Then he answered.

“Yes.”

I ended the call.

I looked at Renata.

My daughter.

The only person in this world I had never doubted.

She was watching me.

She already knew something was wrong.

“What did you find?”

Her voice was weak.

I sat beside her.

For the first time in years…

I didn’t know how to answer my own child.

Because I didn’t want to hurt her with the truth.

But I also couldn’t lie anymore.

“Renata…”

She looked at me.

“Did your mother ever talk about another child?”

Her expression changed.

That was my answer.

She knew.

Slowly, she reached for the notebook.

Her fingers moved across the page.

YES.

My heart tightened.

“How long?”

She looked down.

Then wrote:

SINCE I WAS FIFTEEN.

I froze.

Three years.

My daughter had known for three years that her mother had a secret.

And she never told me.

“Why?”

She looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw guilt in her eyes.

Because Mom told me not to.

I stared at those words.

“Your mother told you?”

Renata nodded.

She wrote:

SHE SAID YOU WOULD NEVER FORGIVE HER.

I looked away.

Because that sentence hurt more than I expected.

Elena knew me.

She knew my anger.

She knew my past.

She knew that when someone betrayed me…

I didn’t simply walk away.

I ended things.

But Elena had misunderstood one thing.

I could forgive anything.

Except losing her.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Where is this girl?”

Renata hesitated.

Then wrote:

I DON’T KNOW.

A second later:

BUT I THINK THEY DO.

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

She pointed at the names on the paper.

Santiago.

Maurice.

Emmett.

The three heirs.

The boys who destroyed her face.

The boys who claimed it was an accident.

Suddenly, the entire story looked different.

They weren’t covering up a crime.

They were protecting a secret.

A secret connected to my wife.

A secret connected to Victor Hale.

And somehow…

My daughter had found it.

The hospital room door opened.

This time, I was ready.

Two men entered.

Not doctors.

Not nurses.

Private security.

I immediately stood up.

“Who sent you?”

One of them showed an identification card.

“Hospital security.”

I looked at it.

Fake.

A normal person wouldn’t notice.

But I wasn’t normal.

Not anymore.

“You have five seconds to leave.”

The man smiled.

“Mr. Salgado…”

He stepped closer.

“You really think changing your name made you invisible?”

My expression changed.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly who I was.

“Who are you?”

The second man locked the door behind him.

The first one smiled.

“Someone who remembers you.”

My body became completely still.

“From where?”

The man laughed softly.

“From before you became a father.”

My eyes hardened.

“Victor?”

The smile disappeared.

Just slightly.

Enough.

I noticed.

“Where is he?”

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward Renata.

“That girl should never have opened that box.”

My voice became dangerous.

“Don’t look at my daughter.”

He ignored me.

“She was curious.”

A pause.

“Just like her mother.”

The room became silent.

I walked forward.

Slowly.

“You have no idea what you just started.”

The man smiled.

“Actually…”

He reached into his jacket.

And placed something on the table.

A small envelope.

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same symbol Victor Hale used nineteen years ago.

A black circle.

With a single white line through the center.

The mark of Argentis Holdings.

The organization I destroyed.

The organization I thought died with my old life.

The man stepped backward.

“Victor wants you to know something.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He smiled.

“He never stopped watching you.”

Then the lights went out.

Again.

The same pattern.

The same darkness.

When the emergency lights returned…

The two men were gone.

But the envelope remained.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Only three sentences.

DANIEL.

YOU SPENT NINETEEN YEARS HIDING FROM ME.

YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED WHY ELENA CHOSE TO HIDE THE TRUTH FROM YOU.

My hands tightened.

Because beneath the letter was another photograph.

This one was newer.

Taken only days ago.

It showed a young woman standing outside Renata’s university.

Dark hair.

Same eyes as Elena.

Same face shape.

And standing beside her…

Santiago Cordova.

Maurice Beltran.

Emmett Varela.

The three boys who attacked my daughter.

The three boys who claimed they barely knew her.

But the photograph proved otherwise.

They knew someone.

Someone connected to my family.

On the back of the photo was a final message.

THEY DIDN’T BREAK YOUR DAUGHTER BECAUSE OF THE KEY.

THEY BROKE HER BECAUSE SHE FOUND HER SISTER.

I slowly lowered the photograph.

Because suddenly I understood.

Renata wasn’t the target.

She was the warning.

And somewhere in New York…

May you like

Another girl carrying my wife’s blood was in danger.
