Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO BROKE MY TRUST

For nineteen years…
I believed Elena was the only person in the world who would never betray me.
I believed she was my safe place.
My reason to change.
My reason to walk away from The Ghost.
But now she was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Breathing.
And hiding the biggest secret of my life.
She knew where Renata was.
The warehouse became silent.
Even Thomas stopped smiling.
Because he knew exactly what this moment meant.
My trust was breaking.
Slowly.
Painfully.
I looked at Elena.
The woman I had mourned for nineteen years.
“Is it true?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“Answer me.”
My voice was quiet.
But even Elena knew what that meant.
She lowered her head.
“Yes.”
That single word hurt more than any betrayal I had ever experienced.
I stepped backward.
“You knew where she was.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe she was kidnapped.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me search for her.”
Her lips trembled.
“Yes.”
I looked away.
Because if I looked at her too long…
I didn’t know if I would see my wife.
Or someone who destroyed my family.
“Why?”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Because they were coming for her.”
I looked back.
“Who?”
She looked toward Thomas.
“Everyone.”
Thomas smiled slightly.
“Now you understand.”
I turned toward him.
“Don’t speak.”
He laughed.
“You still think this is about revenge.”
I stepped closer.
“This is about my daughter.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“This is about the truth your wife spent nineteen years hiding.”
I stared at Elena.
“What truth?”
She didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because Elena had always been brave.
She faced danger.
She faced enemies.
She faced my darkest moments.
But now…
She was afraid.
“Tell him.”
Thomas smiled.
“Tell him what happened the night Renata was born.”
Elena looked at him with hatred.
“Don’t.”
Thomas laughed.
“You still want to protect him?”
I looked between them.
“What happened?”
No one spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
“Renata was never supposed to be alone.”
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?”
She looked at me.
“When she was born…”
A tear rolled down her face.
“There was another baby.”
I froze.
Another baby.
Isabella.
The secret daughter.
The missing piece.
“Elena…”
My voice cracked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because they wanted both children.”
“Who?”
She looked at Thomas.
“People who knew what you were becoming.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas answered instead.
“It means your daughter’s birth was never just a family event.”
I turned toward him.
“What did you do?”
He smiled.
“I protected the future.”
My expression hardened.
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
Thomas stepped closer.
“I saved the world from another Ghost.”
The words hit me.
Because that was exactly what Elena feared.
That Renata would inherit my darkness.
That my past would poison my children.
But there was something Thomas didn’t understand.
My daughter was not a weapon.
She was my reason to stop being one.
“You attacked Renata.”
My voice became colder.
Thomas looked away.
“I didn’t order that.”
I stared at him.
“Then who did?”
Silence.
Elena looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
She whispered.
“You need to leave.”
“No.”
“Please.”
I shook my head.
“Nineteen years ago, you disappeared.”
A pause.
“Tonight, my daughter disappeared.”
I looked directly at her.
“I’m done losing people.”
The lights suddenly flickered.
A sound came from outside.
Vehicles.
Multiple vehicles.
Thomas looked toward the entrance.
For the first time…
His confidence disappeared.
“They found us.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
He didn’t answer.
The warehouse doors exploded open.
Men rushed inside.
Not police.
Not security.
Professional.
Organized.
The same kind of people I used to command.
Elena grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
I looked at her.
“Where is Renata?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“She’s with Isabella.”
I froze.
“Where?”
Before she could answer…
A man entered the warehouse.
Everyone stopped.
Because I knew him.
A face from my childhood.
A face I thought belonged only to my memories.
My older brother.
Gabriel Salgado.
He looked at me.
Calm.
Cold.
“You finally found the truth.”
My hands tightened.
“You’re alive.”
He smiled.
“So are you.”
I stared at him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Elena survived.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Isabella.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Renata being attacked.”
His expression didn’t change.
“Yes.”
The anger inside me exploded.
“Why?”
Gabriel looked at me.
“Because I needed to know something.”
“What?”
He stepped closer.
“Whether Daniel Salgado was still alive…”
A pause.
“Or whether The Ghost had finally returned.”
The room went silent.
Then Gabriel said the words that changed everything.
“The three boys who attacked Renata…”
He looked at Elena.
“They weren’t trying to silence her.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Then what were they doing?”
Gabriel answered:
“They were trying to save her.”
I stared at him.
Impossible.
“They broke her jaw to save her?”
Gabriel looked away.
“No.”
A pause.
“They broke her jaw because they were too late.”
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?”
Gabriel looked at Elena.
“She knows.”
I turned.
“Knows what?”
Elena whispered:
“Renata wasn’t attacked because she found the key.”
Silence.
“She was attacked because she opened the door.”
My expression changed.
“What door?”
Elena looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“The door that reveals who really killed your wife.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?”
Elena looked at Gabriel.
Then at Thomas.
Then finally at me.
And whispered:
“Daniel…”
“The person who ordered my death…”
A pause.
“Was you.”
May you like
The world stopped.
