Chapter 4 - THE CHILD ELENA HID FROM ME

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

I stared at the photograph in my hand.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Elena.

My Elena.

The woman I loved more than anything in this world.

Standing beside Victor Hale.

The man who betrayed me.

The man I spent nineteen years believing was my greatest enemy.

And between them…

A baby.

Not Renata.

A different child.

The photograph shook slightly between my fingers.

I looked at the back again.

The words were still there.

YOUR DAUGHTER WAS NEVER YOUR ONLY CHILD.

My entire life suddenly felt like a carefully built house.

And someone had just removed the foundation.

I heard Renata breathing behind me.

Weak.

Painful.

Confused.

“Dad…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I turned around immediately.

“Don’t talk.”

But she looked at the photograph.

And I realized something terrifying.

She already knew.

“Renata…”

My voice lowered.

“How long have you known?”

Tears formed in her eyes.

She looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

My daughter had been carrying a secret.

A secret connected to her mother.

Connected to my past.

And she had been carrying it alone.

I sat beside her bed.

“Tell me everything.”

She slowly picked up the notebook.

The first words she wrote made my heart stop.

I FOUND THE PHOTO THREE MONTHS AGO.

Three months.

For three months, she knew something was wrong.

For three months, she searched for answers.

For three months, she was afraid to come to me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her hand shook.

BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID.

I looked at her.

“Afraid of me?”

She immediately shook her head.

NO.

Then she wrote:

AFRAID OF WHAT YOU WOULD BECOME.

Those words cut deeper than any weapon ever could.

Because my daughter knew me better than anyone.

She knew there was another person buried inside me.

The Ghost.

I looked back at the photograph.

“Where did you find this?”

She pointed toward the notebook.

Then wrote:

MOM’S OLD STORAGE BOX.

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Elena had a storage box?

A secret box?

After nineteen years?

I thought I knew every corner of my wife’s life.

I thought we had no secrets.

I was wrong.

I reached for my phone.

The first person I called was not my old contact.

It was someone else.

Someone who had protected Elena before I ever met her.

Someone I never thought I would need again.

The phone rang three times.

Then a woman answered.

“Who is this?”

I closed my eyes.

“It’s Daniel.”

Silence.

Then her breathing changed.

“Daniel Salgado?”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“I thought you were dead.”

My expression hardened.

“Why would you think that?”

Because nobody from my old life ever believed people simply disappeared.

She whispered:

“Because Elena told me to forget you.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What did you say?”

“Before she died…”

The woman stopped.

“Before the accident, Elena came to me.”

I stood up.

“What did she tell you?”

Her voice became quieter.

“She said if anything happened to her, I had to protect Renata.”

I looked at my daughter.

“What else?”

“She said Victor Hale was coming back.”

The room became silent.

I stared at the photograph.

“Did Elena know Victor was alive?”

The woman answered:

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

The answer came after several seconds.

“Because she was afraid you would kill him.”

The words hit me.

Because they were true.

If Elena had told me Victor was alive…

The Ghost would have returned nineteen years ago.

And maybe that was exactly what she was trying to prevent.

I looked at Renata.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

I ended the call.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Who is the child in this picture?”

Renata’s eyes filled with tears.

She slowly wrote:

I DON’T KNOW.

Then:

BUT I THINK SHE’S ALIVE.

My heart stopped.

A child.

Another daughter.

A daughter Elena hid from me.

A daughter connected to Victor Hale.

A daughter who might have been the reason my wife died.

Before I could respond…

My old contact called again.

I answered.

His voice was different.

Urgent.

“Boss.”

“What happened?”

“We found something.”

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“The three heirs didn’t choose Renata randomly.”

I walked toward the window.

“Explain.”

“We traced their movements before the attack.”

“And?”

“They were following someone.”

“Who?”

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Your daughter.”

I closed my eyes.

“That’s impossible.”

“No, Boss.”

His voice became lower.

“They weren’t hunting Renata.”

Silence.

“They were hunting whoever she found.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The baby.

Victor.

Elena.

“Find out everything about that child.”

My contact hesitated.

“Boss…”

“What?”

“We already found a record.”

My heart started beating faster.

“What record?”

“A birth certificate.”

I waited.

Then he said the name.

And everything inside me froze.

Because the child Elena hid from me…

Had my last name.

But she was not registered as my daughter.

She was registered as:

RENATA HALE.

I looked at my daughter sitting in the hospital bed.

My world collapsed again.

Because the girl I had spent nineteen years protecting…

May have had a sister.

A sister connected to the man who destroyed my life.

And somewhere in New York…

Someone knew the truth.

May you like

Someone who had been waiting nineteen years for me to find out.
