Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH BEHIND ELENA’S DISAPPEARANCE

The note was still in my hand.
The ink was fresh.
The words were simple.
But they felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.
DANIEL, I’M SORRY.
BUT RENATA WAS NEVER SAFE WITH YOU.
I read the sentence again.
And again.
Because there was only one person in the world who could hurt me with those words.
Elena.
My wife.
The woman who knew every scar I carried.
Every mistake I made.
Every darkness I tried to bury.
But why?
Why would she say Renata was never safe with me?
I turned toward the empty hospital bed.
My daughter was gone.
Again.
Someone had taken the only thing I had left.
The Ghost inside me screamed to come out.
Find them.
Destroy them.
Make them regret breathing.
But Daniel Salgado stayed still.
Because Renata’s voice was still inside my head.
“Promise me you won’t become him.”
I closed my eyes.
And I made a decision.
I would find my daughter.
But I would not lose myself.
Not yet.
The police arrived within minutes.
The hospital became chaos.
Questions.
Reports.
Security checks.
But I already knew what they would find.
Nothing.
The cameras would fail.
The witnesses would disappear.
The evidence would be cleaned.
Because whoever took Renata understood one thing.
They were not fighting the police.
They were fighting me.
A detective approached.
“Mr. Salgado.”
I turned.
“Do you know who took her?”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
His expression changed.
“Who?”
I answered:
“Someone who has been planning this for nineteen years.”
He frowned.
“Do you have a name?”
I looked away.
“Yes.”
But I didn’t say it.
Because saying the name would make it real.
Elena.
The woman I loved.
The woman who might have been protecting us.
Or hiding from us.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph.
Renata.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
My heart stopped.
She looked weak.
But conscious.
A second message appeared.
COME ALONE.
I stared at the screen.
Then another line appeared.
BRING THE KEY.
The key.
Room 214.
Everything returned to that small piece of metal.
I typed one answer.
WHERE?
The reply came instantly.
THE PLACE WHERE ELENA STARTED EVERYTHING.
I knew the location before the next message arrived.
The old Salgado warehouse.
The place where The Ghost was born.
I stood there twenty minutes later.
The abandoned building looked exactly as I remembered.
Broken windows.
Empty rooms.
Dust covering everything.
But inside those walls…
I built an empire.
I walked deeper.
The lights turned on one by one.
Someone was waiting.
A voice came from the darkness.
“You finally came.”
I stopped.
A woman stepped forward.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
My heart stopped.
“Elena.”
For several seconds…
The world disappeared.
She looked exactly like the memory I carried.
Not the same.
Not untouched.
But alive.
My wife was alive.
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to hold her.
I wanted to ask where she had been.
But I couldn’t move.
Because one question came before everything else.
“Why?”
Elena looked down.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew you would ask that.”
“Where have you been?”
“I was protecting you.”
“By making me believe you were dead?”
Her face broke.
“I’m sorry.”
I stepped closer.
“Nineteen years, Elena.”
“I know.”
“Nineteen years of grief.”
“I know.”
“I buried you.”
She closed her eyes.
“I know.”
My anger rose.
“Then explain.”
She looked at me.
“The night of the accident…”
She stopped.
“It wasn’t an accident.”
“I know.”
“No, Daniel.”
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t know everything.”
Silence.
“I survived.”
I stared at her.
“But Thomas found me.”
My fists tightened.
“He wanted the information I had.”
“What information?”
Elena looked at me.
“The truth about Argentis.”
I frowned.
“Your organization?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
She whispered:
“Your father’s organization.”
I froze.
“My father?”
Elena nodded.
“The Ghost didn’t start with you.”
The room became silent.
“What are you saying?”
She stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
Her voice broke.
“Everything you thought you built…”
A pause.
“Was something your family created before you.”
I couldn’t breathe.
Impossible.
My entire life was a lie.
Elena continued.
“Your father created the first version of Argentis.”
I shook my head.
“My father was a businessman.”
“No.”
She looked at me sadly.
“That was the story you were given.”
I remembered my childhood.
The secrets.
The locked rooms.
The people who respected my father too much.
My entire life suddenly looked different.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“From becoming exactly what your father was.”
Before I could answer…
A gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Elena fell.
I caught her before she hit the ground.
“Elena!”
Blood stained my hands.
But she was still breathing.
She grabbed my shirt.
“Daniel…”
Her voice was weak.
“They found us.”
I looked toward the darkness.
A figure appeared.
Slowly.
Clapping.
Thomas Reed.
The man I once called my best friend.
He smiled.
“I was wondering how long it would take you to discover the truth.”
My eyes turned cold.
“You took my daughter.”
Thomas smiled.
“No.”
He looked at Elena.
“She did.”
My heart stopped.
Elena looked away.
And in that moment…
I realized something terrifying.
Thomas wasn’t accusing her.
He was telling the truth.
Elena knew where Renata was.
May you like
And she had been the one who sent her away.
