Chapter 3 - THE SECRET MY WIFE TOOK TO HER GRAVE

The sound of the heart monitor was something I would never forget.

A sharp, terrifying scream cutting through the hospital room.

Doctors rushed in.

Nurses pushed me away from Renata’s bed.

I stood frozen outside the glass door.

Watching strangers fight to keep my daughter alive.

Again.

Another moment where I had power over everything in the world…

Except the one person who mattered most.

For nineteen years, I believed I had escaped my past.

I believed changing my name was enough.

I believed leaving behind The Ghost was enough.

But I was wrong.

The past had found me.

And it had used my daughter to open the door.

Thirty minutes later, the doctor finally walked out.

His expression was serious.

“She is stable.”

I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“But she is extremely weak.”

I nodded.

“Can I see her?”

“Five minutes.”

I entered the room.

Renata looked smaller than she ever had.

The strongest person I knew was now fighting just to open her eyes.

I sat beside her.

“Renata.”

Her eyelids moved.

Slowly.

She looked at me.

Fear was still there.

Not pain.

Not confusion.

Fear.

That terrified me more than anything.

Because my daughter had always been brave.

“Tell me what happened.”

She tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

I took the notebook.

“Write.”

Her fingers shook.

The pen moved slowly across the page.

I WATCHED THEM.

My heart tightened.

“Who?”

She closed her eyes.

Then wrote another word.

THEY.

I understood.

The three boys.

Santiago.

Maurice.

Emmett.

But something bothered me.

“Renata…”

She looked at me.

“Why did they want the key?”

Her expression changed.

She knew something.

Something she had been afraid to tell me.

She grabbed my hand.

Her fingers squeezed weakly.

Then she wrote:

I FOUND MOM’S FILE.

I stopped breathing.

“What file?”

She looked toward the hospital door.

Like she was afraid someone could hear.

Then she wrote:

THE TRUTH ABOUT HER DEATH.

The room suddenly felt colder.

For nineteen years, I had carried Elena’s death like a wound that never healed.

The police report.

The investigation.

The funeral.

Everything said the same thing.

A drunk driver crossed the highway.

Elena lost control.

A tragic accident.

I wanted to believe it.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Someone had killed the woman I loved.

And I had failed to find them.

I leaned closer.

“What did you find?”

Renata’s eyes filled with tears.

She wrote one sentence.

MOM KNEW YOU WERE THE GHOST.

The pen slipped from her hand.

I stared at the words.

For nineteen years, I thought I had hidden everything.

I thought my daughter only knew Daniel Salgado.

The quiet father.

The simple businessman.

The man who never raised his voice.

But Elena knew.

And now Renata knew.

The door suddenly opened.

A nurse walked in.

The same nurse from earlier.

But this time…

She wasn’t pretending.

She looked directly at Renata.

Then at me.

“You shouldn’t have asked questions.”

My entire body went still.

I stepped between her and my daughter.

“Who are you?”

She smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

A confident one.

The smile of someone who believed they were protected.

“You really don’t remember me?”

I studied her face.

Nothing.

Then she removed her hospital badge.

And placed it on the table.

The name made my blood freeze.

CLAIRE HALE.

Victor Hale’s daughter.

The daughter of the man who betrayed me.

The daughter of the man who destroyed everything I built.

Renata looked terrified.

“Dad…”

Her voice was weak.

“Don’t…”

But it was too late.

Claire smiled.

“You finally understand.”

I stared at her.

“You attacked my daughter.”

“No.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Your daughter found something she shouldn’t have.”

“You broke her jaw.”

“We warned her.”

My hands tightened.

“Warned her?”

Claire stepped closer.

“You should ask yourself why your daughter was investigating your wife’s death.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

She leaned forward.

“Your wife wasn’t killed because of a random accident.”

Silence.

“She died because she tried to expose your old organization.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Liar.”

Claire smiled.

“That’s what you always said when people told you the truth.”

She turned toward Renata.

“She found the documents.”

I looked at my daughter.

“She found evidence that your wife was preparing to destroy everything you built.”

Impossible.

Elena would never.

She knew who I was.

She knew what I had done.

But she also knew why I walked away.

She was the only person who believed I could become better.

Claire continued.

“She hid the evidence before they killed her.”

My voice dropped.

“Who killed her?”

Claire smiled.

The same smile her father used to have.

“The same people who hurt your daughter.”

The room became silent.

Then Claire placed a small envelope on the table.

“Open it when you’re ready to remember.”

She turned around.

I grabbed her arm.

“You’re not leaving.”

For a moment, her confidence disappeared.

Then she whispered:

“You still don’t understand, do you?”

“What?”

“The three boys are not the enemy.”

I froze.

She looked at Renata.

“They are only the beginning.”

Then the lights in the hospital suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

A second later…

The emergency alarms started screaming.

When the lights returned…

Claire was gone.

And so was the silver key.

I looked at Renata’s empty hand.

The key was missing.

Someone had entered the room during the blackout.

Someone close enough to touch my daughter.

Someone brave enough to steal from The Ghost.

I opened the envelope Claire left behind.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph taken nineteen years ago.

It showed Elena.

Standing beside Victor Hale.

And holding a baby.

My hands started shaking.

Because the baby was not Renata.

On the back of the photograph was one sentence:

May you like

YOUR DAUGHTER WAS NEVER YOUR ONLY CHILD.
