Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE GHOST WAS BORN

The highway was empty.
Almost forgotten.
A place where thousands of cars passed every day without knowing that one night here changed everything.
A place where I lost my wife.
A place where my entire life became a lie.
I stood beside the old road.
The wind was cold.
The city lights were far away.
And for the first time in nineteen years…
I was afraid of the truth.
Not because I feared an enemy.
Not because I feared death.
I feared discovering that the monster I had been searching for…
Was myself.
The headlights of another car appeared in the distance.
It stopped.
The door opened.
Isabella stepped out.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Because she looked like Elena.
Not exactly.
But enough.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same sadness hidden behind strength.
She looked at me.
No anger.
No hatred.
Only disappointment.
“You came.”
I nodded.
“You asked me to.”
She looked away.
“I didn’t think you would.”
“Why?”
Her voice became colder.
“Because everyone says you always leave when things become difficult.”
The words hurt.
Because I knew someone had taught her that.
“Who told you that?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked toward the roadside barrier.
“This is where she crashed.”
I followed.
The memories returned.
The phone call.
The police.
The hospital.
The funeral.
The worst night of my life.
“I was told she died here.”
Isabella looked at me.
“She didn’t.”
Silence.
“She survived.”
I looked at her.
“Then what happened?”
She reached into her jacket.
And pulled out an old envelope.
“My mother gave this to me before she disappeared.”
My heart tightened.
“Your mother?”
She nodded.
“Elena.”
I stared at the envelope.
“Why give it to you?”
“Because she knew one day you would come looking.”
I took it carefully.
Inside was a small memory card.
And a letter.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
Daniel,
If you are reading this…
then the truth finally found you.
I stopped.
The same words.
The same pain.
I continued.
I need you to understand something.
I never left because I stopped loving you.
I left because I loved you too much.
My hands tightened.
The next line made my chest hurt.
The night of the accident, you were supposed to find out everything.
Everything about Argentis.
Everything about your father.
Everything about the people controlling your life.
I looked at Isabella.
She was watching me.
I continued reading.
But someone changed the information you received.
Someone made you believe I betrayed you.
Someone made you believe I was your enemy.
My breathing became heavier.
The next sentence froze me.
And that person was not Victor Hale.
Not Thomas Reed.
Not Gabriel Salgado.
I looked at Isabella.
“Who?”
She pointed at the memory card.
“Watch.”
I inserted it into my phone.
The video began.
A dark room.
A table.
A man sitting in the shadows.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
My own.
The recording showed me.
Nineteen years younger.
The Ghost.
I watched myself speaking.
“I want the problem removed.”
My face turned pale.
The voice behind the camera asked:
“Even if she finds out?”
My younger self answered:
“She won’t.”
The video paused.
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
“No.”
Isabella watched me.
“That’s what I thought too.”
The video continued.
My younger self stood up.
“I want Elena protected.”
I froze.
What?
The recording continued.
“She is the only person who knows the truth.”
A different voice spoke.
A voice I recognized.
Thomas.
“We can’t guarantee her safety.”
My younger self answered:
“Then make sure nobody touches her.”
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
Confused.
Broken.
Because the truth was different from what everyone believed.
I did not order Elena’s death.
I ordered her protection.
Someone had edited the information.
Someone had changed the story.
But who?
Isabella looked at me.
“Now you understand.”
I looked up.
“Understand what?”
“That my mother never hated you.”
A pause.
“She was afraid someone would make you hate yourself.”
I looked toward the highway.
All these years.
All this guilt.
All this anger.
Built on a lie.
My phone suddenly rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Daniel, where are you?”
“Why?”
“We found the person who altered the files.”
My heart accelerated.
“Who?”
Silence.
Then:
“Someone who had access to everything.”
“Name.”
Marcus hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who raised Renata while you worked.”
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?”
“The person who was always near your family.”
I looked at Isabella.
Then the road.
Then the memory card.
“Marcus…”
My voice became dangerous.
“Tell me.”
He whispered:
“The person who betrayed you was not your enemy.”
A pause.
“They were your family.”
I closed my eyes.
Because there was only one person left.
One person everyone trusted.
One person who had been there since the beginning.
My heart stopped.
“No.”
Marcus answered:
“Yes.”
The line went silent.
Then he said the name.
“Daniel…”
“It was Elena’s closest friend.”
I froze.
My mind raced through every memory.
Every conversation.
Every moment.
And suddenly…
I remembered.
The woman who cried beside me at Elena’s funeral.
The woman who helped raise Renata.
The woman who always knew where we were.
The woman who always said she was protecting us.
I whispered the name:
“Claire.”
The woman who had been helping my family for nineteen years.
The woman who was Victor Hale’s daughter.
May you like
The woman who had been standing beside us the entire time.
