Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The ballroom became completely silent.
The woman standing in front of me looked familiar.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had seen her before.
In old photographs.
In documents my father kept locked away.
Her name was Margaret Hayes.
A former financial advisor who had worked with the Whitmore family for nearly fifteen years.
And judging by the terrified expression on Eleanor’s face…
she wasn’t supposed to be here.
“Margaret,” Eleanor said sharply.
The woman ignored her.
Her eyes stayed on me.
“Vivienne Carter?”
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
She took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.”
My father stepped beside me.
“What are you talking about?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Alexander, you need to hear this too.”
The room watched as she opened the envelope in her hands.
Inside were copies of contracts.
Bank statements.
Private messages.
My stomach tightened.
“What are those?”
Margaret looked at me.
“Evidence.”
“Of what?”
She glanced toward Dominic.
“Of the reason your husband’s family fought so hard for this marriage.”
Dominic looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry, Dominic.”
He froze.
“You knew?”
She lowered her eyes.
“I knew before you did.”
The words hit him.
His face changed.
“What are you saying?”
Margaret placed a document on the table.
“Your family was not interested in Vivienne because she was your wife.”
She paused.
“They were interested because of who she was.”
Dominic looked at me.
Then at his mother.
Then back at Margaret.
“No.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Enough.”
But nobody listened.
Because everyone finally wanted the truth.
Margaret continued.
“Six months before your wedding, the Whitmore company was facing bankruptcy.”
Whispers spread through the room.
Chloe shook her head.
“That’s impossible.”
Margaret looked at her.
“No. What’s impossible is pretending your family wasn’t drowning.”
Eleanor’s face turned red.
“My family built everything ourselves.”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“No.”
She pointed toward my father.
“Your family survived because Alexander Carter invested millions into your businesses years ago.”
My eyes widened.
“Dad?”
He nodded slowly.
“I never told you because I wanted you to make your own choices.”
I looked at Dominic.
Suddenly, everything felt different.
Every dinner.
Every family gathering.
Every time Chloe mocked my clothes.
Every time Eleanor reminded me I was lucky.
They weren’t looking down on me.
They were looking up at me.
They just didn’t know it.
Dominic stepped back.
“So my mother knew who Vivienne was?”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“And she never told me?”
“No.”
The pain on his face was impossible to miss.
For the first time, Dominic looked like a man realizing he had been used.
“She told me Vivienne came from a simple family.”
Margaret looked at Eleanor.
“She wanted you to believe that.”
Eleanor crossed her arms.
“Because I wanted to know if he loved her.”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“If Dominic knew you were wealthy, how could we know if your marriage was real?”
I stared at her.
The irony was almost unbelievable.
The woman who spent three years insulting me for being “poor”…
was the same woman who knew exactly who I was.
“You knew.”
My voice was quiet.
“You knew the entire time.”
Eleanor said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Dominic walked toward me.
“Vivienne…”
I stepped back.
Not because I hated him.
Because I was hurt.
“You knew my family was important.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I swear I didn’t.”
“But your mother did.”
“Yes.”
“And you still let her treat me like that.”
His face fell.
“I thought they were just being difficult.”
I laughed softly.
“Difficult?”
I touched the torn fabric of my dress.
“This was difficult?”
Dominic looked away.
Because he had no answer.
Then Chloe suddenly spoke.
“You’re all acting like she’s innocent.”
Everyone turned.
She looked desperate now.
“She lied too.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Chloe pointed at me.
“She hid her identity.”
My father stepped forward.
“She had every right.”
Chloe laughed.
“No. She tricked us.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“I protected myself.”
The room went quiet.
“I wanted someone to love me without knowing my father’s name.”
I looked at Dominic.
“And I thought I found that person.”
Dominic lowered his head.
That hurt more than any insult.
Then Margaret pulled out another document.
“There is one more thing.”
My father looked at her.
“What?”
She hesitated.
Then said:
“The ring accusation was not just about humiliating Vivienne.”
Everyone froze.
“What do you mean?”
Margaret looked at Chloe.
“Chloe needed a public scandal.”
Chloe’s face changed.
“Why?”
Margaret answered:
“Because tomorrow morning, the Whitmore family’s biggest debt was going to become public.”
The room exploded with whispers.
May you like
And then she revealed the final piece.
“They needed someone to blame before their company collapsed.”
