Chapter 6 - THE MAN I MARRIED

The ballroom was no longer a wedding reception.
It was a courtroom without a judge.
Everyone was watching.
Waiting.
My father held the folder tightly.
“What’s inside?”
I asked.
He looked at Dominic first.
Then at me.
“Documents.”
“About what?”
A long silence followed.
Then he answered.
“About Dominic.”
My husband’s face changed.
“What?”
My father opened the folder.
“Before you married Vivienne, someone investigated your family.”
Dominic frowned.
“Who?”
“Your mother.”
Eleanor immediately shouted:
“That’s a lie!”
My father didn’t even look at her.
“She was concerned that Dominic’s marriage to my daughter would expose your financial situation.”
I stared at Dominic.
“Did you know your family was struggling?”
He looked hurt.
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“But I didn’t know about this.”
He looked around.
“I didn’t know they planned to use Vivienne.”
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But trust is like glass.
Once broken…
even apologies cannot make it invisible.
My father placed another document on the table.
“This is a transfer record.”
Dominic looked at it.
Then froze.
“What is this?”
My father answered:
“Payments made by your mother.”
“To who?”
The room waited.
“To private investigators.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Investigating me?”
My father nodded.
“For months.”
Chloe suddenly looked nervous.
Because she knew.
This wasn’t about a ring anymore.
This was about something much bigger.
A phone rang.
Everyone looked around.
It was Chloe’s.
She looked at the screen.
Her face immediately changed.
“Who is it?”
Nobody answered.
She ignored the call.
But seconds later, another phone rang.
Eleanor’s.
Then Dominic’s.
Then mine.
My father looked at the three screens.
And slowly smiled.
Because he already knew.
Something was happening.
Something they couldn’t control.
Dominic looked at me.
“Vivienne…”
I answered.
“What?”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“I think my family has been lying to me too.”
Before I could respond…
the ballroom doors opened again.
A woman walked inside.
Older.
Elegant.
Carrying a thick envelope.
My father immediately recognized her.
His face turned serious.
“Why are you here?”
The woman looked around the room.
Then directly at me.
“I came because Vivienne deserves to know the truth.”
I stood frozen.
“What truth?”
The woman walked closer.
May you like
Then said the words that changed my entire understanding of my marriage:
“Your husband was never the person you thought he was.”
