Chapter 11 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE PLAN

The location was an abandoned office building on the edge of the city.
My father wanted me to stay home.
I refused.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Vivienne.”
“I spent three years letting people decide what I could handle.”
I grabbed my coat.
“Not anymore.”
He studied me.
Then slowly nodded.
“Just stay close.”
Dominic came too.
I didn’t ask him.
He simply followed.
Maybe he knew he had to prove something.
Maybe he knew apologies were not enough.
When we arrived, police were already there.
The building was empty.
Almost.
Inside one office, they found boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photos.
And hundreds of pages of notes.
My father picked up one file.
His face changed.
“What?”
I asked.
He handed it to me.
My hands froze.
It was about me.
Not Carter Global.
Me.
My childhood.
My school.
My relationships.
My marriage.
Everything.
Someone had been watching me.
For years.
Dominic looked through another folder.
Then suddenly stepped back.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He held a document.
His hands were shaking.
“My mother.”
The paper contained payments.
Large payments.
From Richard Hale.
To Eleanor Whitmore.
My stomach dropped.
“Your mother was working with him?”
Dominic looked destroyed.
“I didn’t know.”
Again.
Those words.
I didn’t know.
But this time…
I believed him.
Because the pain on his face was real.
Then we found the final folder.
The one hidden beneath the desk.
My father opened it carefully.
Inside was a contract.
A plan.
A plan created months before my wedding.
The title made my blood run cold.
PROJECT: CARTER FAMILY ACCESS
I read the first page.
The goal was simple.
Marry into the Carter family.
Gain trust.
Gain information.
Gain control.
My hands started shaking.
Because there was a name at the bottom.
The person who approved the plan.
Eleanor Whitmore.
Dominic looked like he had been punched.
“My mother…”
He couldn’t finish.
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw him differently.
Not as the man who betrayed me.
But as another person who had been manipulated.
A victim of the same people who hurt me.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone froze.
The police raised their weapons.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Eleanor.
She was alone.
Calm.
Too calm.
“You really thought you could destroy me?”
My father stepped forward.
“You destroyed yourself.”
She smiled.
“No.”
Her eyes moved to me.
“She did.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Eleanor laughed softly.
“Vivienne still doesn’t know the biggest secret.”
My heart slowed.
“What secret?”
She looked at Dominic.
Then back at me.
“The reason your father investigated him.”
Nobody moved.
“What are you talking about?”
May you like
Eleanor smiled.
“Ask your husband why he was really chosen.”
