Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO BROUGHT THE TRUTH

Nobody moved.
The stranger stood in the middle of the penthouse holding the folder like it weighed nothing.
But everyone knew.
Inside that folder was the truth.
Jason looked terrified.
“Why are you here?”
The man looked at him calmly.
“Because you made one mistake.”
Jason said nothing.
“You thought nobody was watching.”
I looked at the stranger.
“Who are you?”
He turned toward me.
“My name is Daniel Reed.”
He handed me the folder.
“I was your father’s attorney.”
My hands froze.
“My father’s attorney?”
He nodded.
“Before he passed away, your father asked me to protect you.”
My eyes filled with tears.
My father.
The man who always told me to be careful who I trusted.
The man who knew the world could be cruel.
Daniel opened the folder.
“Your father suspected someone might try to manipulate you after his death.”
Everyone looked at Jason.
Jason immediately shook his head.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Three months ago, Jason contacted my office.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
Daniel looked at me.
“He tried to convince us that you were unable to manage your inheritance.”
The room gasped.
“He wanted legal control over your accounts.”
Jason stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.”
Daniel pulled out several documents.
“Then you won’t mind looking at your own signature.”
Jason stopped.
Because he knew.
The documents were real.
Daniel placed them on the table.
“These were submitted using forged information.”
Linda looked at her son in horror.
“You forged her signature?”
Jason’s face became angry.
“I was trying to help!”
Nobody believed him.
Not anymore.
I looked at Jason.
The man I once planned to spend my life with.
The man who promised to protect me.
“You were never protecting me.”
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“You were protecting yourself.”
For the first time that night, Jason looked defeated.
But then something changed.
His sadness disappeared.
His eyes became cold.
“You want the truth?”
Everyone stared.
Jason smiled.
“I wasn’t the only one lying.”
A strange silence filled the room.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
Jason looked directly at Daniel.
And Daniel’s expression changed.
Like he knew exactly what Jason was about to say.
Jason laughed quietly.
“You should ask your father’s attorney why he waited until today to show up.”
My heart stopped.
Everyone turned toward Daniel.
Jason continued.
“Ask him why he kept the biggest secret from you.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation was enough.
Because suddenly, I realized something terrifying.
Tonight wasn’t just about Jason’s betrayal.
There was another secret.
One my father had taken to his grave.
Daniel slowly opened his mouth.
May you like
And the words he said next changed everything I thought I knew about my own family.
