Chapter 12 - THE RECORDING THAT REVEALED THE TRUTH

The hidden camera sat on the table.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But it carried the weight of a nightmare.

Daniel examined it carefully.

“This wasn’t installed tonight.”

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?”

He looked at me.

“It has been here for weeks.”

Weeks.

That word made my skin crawl.

Someone had been watching me.

Watching my home.

Watching my private moments.

Watching everything.

Linda covered her mouth.

“How could someone do this?”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Daniel connected the camera to his laptop.

“We need to see what was recorded.”

I didn’t know if I was ready.

But I needed the truth.

The first video appeared.

It showed my living room.

Empty.

Then Jason entered.

My heart tightened.

He was talking to someone.

But the person was off camera.

“Whoever you are, come closer,” Daniel said.

The camera angle shifted.

And then we saw the person.

I stopped breathing.

Rebecca.

Jason’s sister.

“No…”

She looked terrified on the screen.

“I don’t think this is right, Jason.”

The room went silent.

The recording continued.

Jason looked angry.

“You already helped me.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I didn’t know you were going to hurt her.”

Jason laughed.

“Hurt her?”

His voice was cold.

“I’m giving myself what I deserve.”

I felt sick.

The recording continued.

Rebecca whispered:

“What if she finds out?”

Jason answered:

“She won’t.”

Then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“By the time Emily understands what happened, everything will already belong to us.”

I closed my eyes.

The pain was almost too much.

Not just because of Jason.

Because of how close danger had been.

The recording suddenly changed.

A new person entered.

Everyone leaned closer.

And then I saw him.

A man I hadn’t seen in years.

Victor Hale.

Alive.

Standing in my house.

My heart stopped.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

Victor looked at Jason.

“You’re moving too slowly.”

Jason looked nervous.

“I’m doing what you asked.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You’re doing what you think will work.”

The room became silent.

Because now we knew.

Jason wasn’t the mastermind.

He was only a piece.

Victor looked directly at the camera.

Almost like he knew we would watch it someday.

Then he said:

“Michael Carter was always too trusting.”

My father’s name.

Again.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the black screen.

My father.

Jason.

The money.

The betrayal.

Everything was connected.

Daniel slowly closed the laptop.

“Emily.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His expression was serious.

“You need to hear the rest of the recording.”

“There’s more?”

He nodded.

“There’s another file.”

He clicked on it.

The screen went black.

Then a new video started.

And the first words spoken made my entire body freeze.

It was my father’s voice.

“If you are watching this, it means I failed to protect my daughter.”

I covered my mouth.

Because my father wasn’t just leaving me a warning.

May you like

He was leaving me a final battle plan.
