Chapter 5 - THE DOCUMENTS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Nobody spoke.
The only sound in the room was my breathing.
Slow.
Broken.
Unbelieving.
Jason looked at the photo on my phone.
Then he looked at me.
“Emily, that’s not what it looks like.”
I almost laughed.
“How many times are you going to say that?”
He stepped closer.
“I can explain.”
“No.”
My voice was stronger now.
“You can’t explain everything.”
I held up my phone.
“You can’t explain the messages.”
I pointed at the screen.
“You can’t explain the pictures.”
Then I looked around the room.
“And you can’t explain why everyone here knows the truth before I did.”
Jason’s mother covered her mouth.
She looked devastated.
“Jason…”
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You’re making a huge mistake.”
That sentence surprised me.
Not because he said it.
Because of how he said it.
Like I was the one doing something wrong.
Like exposing his betrayal was the crime.
I wiped my tears.
“The only mistake I made was trusting you.”
Jason’s face hardened.
“You think you know everything?”
The room went quiet.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
He smiled slightly.
And that smile made my blood run cold.
“You really think I’m the villain here?”
Nobody understood.
But I did.
He wasn’t sorry.
He was angry.
Angry that he had been caught.
Robert stepped between us.
“Jason, enough.”
But Jason pushed past him.
“You all have no idea what’s happening.”
Linda looked at her son.
“Then tell us.”
Jason looked around.
His family.
His friends.
Everyone waiting.
Finally, he sighed.
“The company is failing.”
Nobody moved.
“What?”
His father’s face changed.
Jason continued.
“I needed access to Emily’s money.”
My heart dropped.
There it was.
The truth.
No more excuses.
No more pretending.
He didn’t marry me because he loved me.
He chose me because he saw me as a solution.
A bank account.
A way out.
“You planned to use me.”
Jason shook his head.
“I planned to protect our future.”
I stared at him.
“Our future?”
I laughed.
“You were sleeping with other women while planning to steal from me.”
The other woman looked away.
Even she couldn’t defend him anymore.
Then Robert suddenly spoke.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
His face had gone pale.
“Jason…”
He looked toward the documents on the phone.
“Where did you get those contracts?”
Jason said nothing.
His father walked closer.
“I know those papers.”
A cold feeling entered my chest.
“What do you mean?”
Robert looked at me.
“Those documents are not just financial agreements.”
He paused.
“They are legal authorization papers.”
My eyes widened.
“What kind of authorization?”
Robert looked at his son.
“The kind that gives someone control over another person’s assets.”
The room erupted.
Jason’s expression changed.
Because his father had just exposed the one thing he never wanted anyone to know.
He wasn’t planning a divorce.
He wasn’t planning to leave.
He was planning to take everything.
Then the penthouse lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone turned toward the entrance.
A man stood there.
Holding a folder.
“Sorry for interrupting.”
Jason’s face turned completely white.
Because he recognized him.
The man walked inside.
“I believe these belong to Emily.”
He placed the folder on the table.
Then he said:
May you like
“And they prove Jason tried to steal from her.”
