CHAPTER 6: THE RING THAT REVEALED A LIE

Marcus Vance had spent his entire life learning one important lesson.

People could lie.

Documents could lie.

Money could lie.

But small details rarely did.

And that ring…

That ring told him something he didn’t want to believe.

The security room felt colder than before.

Nobody spoke.

The paused image remained frozen on the monitor.

A blurry figure standing behind little Leo.

A figure who had followed him through the west hallway.

A figure wearing a ring identical to Victoria’s.

Marcus slowly turned toward his wife.

Victoria noticed.

And for the first time that day…

She looked nervous.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked.

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at her hand.

The diamond ring.

The same ring he had given her on their tenth anniversary.

The ring she wore every day.

“What happened to your ring that night?”

Victoria’s face changed.

“What?”

“The night Leo disappeared.”

A long silence followed.

Victoria laughed softly.

“Are you serious?”

Marcus didn’t smile.

“I asked you a question.”

She crossed her arms.

“You think because someone in a blurry video has a similar ring, it’s me?”

“No.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“I think you know more than you’re telling me.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Unbelievable.”

She looked toward Elena.

“This is what she wanted.”

Elena immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Victoria pointed at her.

“She brought suspicion into this house. She filled your head with doubts.”

Marcus’s eyes remained on Victoria.

“No one filled my head with anything.”

His voice became colder.

“I saw the footage myself.”

Victoria looked away.

That small movement told Marcus more than any confession could.

Elena watched quietly.

She had never seen Marcus look at his wife this way.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Something worse.

Uncertain.

Marcus walked back to the monitor.

“Play the footage again.”

Victoria’s voice became sharper.

“Why?”

“Because I want to see the moment before the camera cuts.”

“There’s nothing there.”

Marcus looked at her.

“How do you know?”

Victoria froze.

The question landed like a stone.

Elena noticed too.

Marcus pressed the rewind button.

The footage moved backward.

11:44 PM.

Leo walking alone.

11:43 PM.

The hallway empty.

11:42 PM.

Elena entering the playroom.

Then Marcus stopped.

“Zoom in.”

The security system enlarged the image.

Elena appeared on screen.

She was holding a small stuffed bear.

Marcus looked at her.

“You were looking for this?”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“That was Leo’s favorite toy. He wouldn’t sleep without it.”

Marcus watched the footage again.

Elena wasn’t ignoring Leo.

She wasn’t careless.

She was trying to help him.

Then the camera showed something else.

A shadow.

Moving behind the corner.

Marcus froze.

“Who was that?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at the security logs.

“The footage was altered from inside the house.”

Elena looked confused.

“Inside?”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

He turned toward the control panel.

“Only five people have access to this system.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“Are you accusing me?”

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m saying someone with access changed the footage.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“And you think it’s me?”

Marcus didn’t respond.

That answer was enough.

Victoria’s face twisted with anger.

“You actually believe I would hurt my own child?”

Marcus’s expression softened slightly.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I believe you’re hiding something.”

The words cut deeper than an accusation.

Because they were true.

Victoria looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Elena noticed something on the screen.

“Wait.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

She pointed.

“Look at the person’s hand.”

The image was blurry, but the figure’s hand was visible.

The ring was there.

But something else was there too.

A small scar.

A mark near the wrist.

Marcus stared.

Then his face changed.

Because he recognized that scar.

And it wasn’t Victoria’s.

“Who is it?” Elena whispered.

Marcus didn’t answer.

He already knew.

The person in the footage wasn’t Victoria.

But that made everything worse.

Because the person wearing her ring…

was someone Victoria had allowed close to the family.

Someone who had been inside the Vance estate for years.

Someone who knew Leo’s routines.

Someone who knew the security system.

Marcus walked out of the security room without saying a word.

Victoria followed.

“Where are you going?”

Marcus stopped.

“To find the person who has been playing games inside my house.”

Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Marcus, listen to me.”

He looked down at her hand.

Then slowly removed it.

“Why should I?”

Her eyes widened.

Because those were words she never expected from him.

Marcus walked away.

Elena stayed behind for a moment, holding Leo.

Then she noticed something.

The flash drive was still connected to the computer.

But on the screen, a new notification appeared.

A hidden file had opened.

A file that had not been there before.

The title was simple.

“THE REAL REASON LEO WAS TAKEN.”

Elena stared at the screen.

Her heart began racing.

Because whoever created that file…

wanted Marcus to find it.

May you like

And they wanted him to find it now.
