CHAPTER 13: THE TRUTH BURIED UNDER THE ESTATE

The message remained on every screen in the Vance mansion.
YOU ARE TOO LATE.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The words stared back at them like a threat.
Marcus Vance had spent his entire life controlling situations before they became problems.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, every answer created three more questions.
His father had hidden a child.
His wife had been manipulated.
His trusted attorney had betrayed him.
And the nanny everyone underestimated had been carrying a secret connected to his family’s darkest history.
Marcus looked at the screens.
“Midnight.”
Victoria swallowed.
“He wants us to find something.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“He wants us to remember something.”
Marcus studied her.
“What do you mean?”
Elena looked at the message.
“My mother used to say that people who hide the truth always leave a path back to it.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Your mother said that?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“She believed secrets always have a weakness.”
Marcus looked around the room.
The old study.
The hidden files.
The missing footage.
The strange messages.
Everything had been carefully planned.
Someone wanted them to uncover the past.
But why?
At 11:45 PM, Marcus gathered everyone in the security room.
The system had returned.
But something was different.
Every camera feed was working.
Except one.
The basement.
Marcus frowned.
“The basement camera is still offline.”
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“Why does that matter?”
Marcus turned.
“Because my father’s private archive was down there.”
Elena looked confused.
“Archive?”
Marcus nodded.
“My father kept personal documents there.”
“About Alexander?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
“Yes.”
Victoria stepped back.
“I thought that room was sealed.”
“It was.”
Marcus looked at the screen.
“Someone opened it.”
The basement door was hidden behind a large wooden panel in the library.
Only Marcus knew the code.
Or at least…
he thought he did.
He entered the numbers.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Cold air rushed out.
The basement looked untouched.
Dust covered the shelves.
Old boxes filled the walls.
A lifetime of Vance family history hidden underground.
Marcus walked inside.
Elena followed.
Victoria hesitated.
Then entered too.
The door closed behind them.
Marcus turned on the lights.
A single table sat in the middle of the room.
On it was a folder.
Waiting.
Marcus approached slowly.
The name written on it made him stop.
ELENA REYES.
Elena’s face changed.
“Why is my name here?”
Marcus looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
Victoria whispered:
“Open it.”
Marcus picked it up.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Letters.
Everything connected to Elena’s mother.
Marcus read the first page.
Then his expression changed.
“What?”
Elena stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Your mother wasn’t only investigating Alexander.”
Elena waited.
“She was protecting him.”
The words shocked her.
“What?”
Marcus handed her the document.
Elena read it.
Her hands began shaking.
It was a letter written by her mother.
A letter addressed to Richard Vance.
Richard,
I know what Alexander has done, but I also know why he did it. He was not born dangerous. He was created by years of betrayal and abandonment.
Elena covered her mouth.
Marcus kept reading.
The greatest threat to your family is not Alexander. It is the person who convinced him everyone had abandoned him.
Victoria looked nervous.
“Who?”
Marcus turned the page.
Then stopped.
The next sentence was underlined.
Do not trust the person who benefits most from the conflict.
Silence.
Everyone looked at each other.
Because that sentence could mean anyone.
Suddenly, a sound came from behind the shelves.
A small movement.
Marcus immediately turned.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
He stepped forward.
“Elena, stay back.”
He moved toward the corner.
Then he saw it.
A hidden door.
A door nobody had noticed.
Marcus opened it slowly.
Inside was a small room.
And someone was there.
A woman.
Older.
Weak.
But alive.
Everyone froze.
Elena’s eyes widened.
“No…”
The woman looked up.
Her face was pale.
But her eyes were familiar.
Elena whispered:
“Mom?”
The woman started crying.
“Elena…”
The world stopped.
Elena dropped to her knees.
“My mother…”
Victoria covered her mouth.
Marcus stood frozen.
Because the woman who was supposed to be dead…
was alive.
The woman who knew the truth.
The woman who had spent years investigating the Vance family.
The woman who could explain everything.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who did this to you?”
Elena’s mother looked at him.
Fear filled her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“Your father.”
Everyone froze.
Marcus shook his head.
“My father died years ago.”
The woman looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“He didn’t act alone.”
Marcus’s heart raced.
“Who helped him?”
The woman looked past Marcus.
Straight at Victoria.
And whispered:
“The person standing beside you.”
Victoria’s face went completely pale.
Elena looked between them.
“No…”
The woman closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Elena.”
Her voice trembled.
“I should have told you sooner.”
Marcus stared at Victoria.
The woman’s final words echoed in the basement.
“The truth was never hidden from your family…”
A pause.
“It was hidden by your family.”
Then the basement lights went out.
And when they came back on…
May you like
Elena’s mother was gone.
