CHAPTER 12: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The door slammed shut behind David Whitmore.
But his final words remained.
“Alexander knows Elena is here.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The old study felt smaller.
The walls that had protected generations of the Vance family now felt like they were closing in around them.
Marcus Vance stared at Elena.
Not with anger.
Not anymore.
With confusion.
With a thousand questions.
“You knew my father.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“No.”
Marcus’s expression tightened.
“You just told me your mother was connected to him.”
“Yes.”
“Then explain.”
Elena took a slow breath.
She looked at Leo first.
The little boy was asleep against her shoulder, unaware that his entire future was being decided around him.
“My mother worked for your father.”
Marcus froze.
“Worked for him?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of work?”
Elena hesitated.
And that hesitation bothered Marcus more than anything.
“Tell me the truth.”
Elena looked at him.
“She was his private investigator.”
The room went silent.
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“Your mother was investigating Richard Vance?”
Elena nodded.
“She was trying to uncover what happened to Alexander.”
Marcus walked away slowly.
His mind was racing.
His father.
Alexander.
The hidden child.
The missing inheritance.
Elena.
Everything was connected.
“But why would my father need an investigator?”
Elena looked toward the old fireplace.
“Because he realized someone inside the family was trying to destroy Alexander.”
Marcus turned.
“Who?”
Elena shook her head.
“My mother never found out.”
Victoria let out a bitter laugh.
“So we have spent years fighting each other while someone else was controlling everything.”
Marcus looked at her.
“That’s what it looks like.”
Victoria looked away.
For once, she didn’t argue.
She didn’t defend herself.
Because she knew it was true.
A sudden sound came from upstairs.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked toward the ceiling.
Marcus frowned.
“Whose phone is that?”
Nobody answered.
The sound continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then stopped.
Marcus immediately walked toward the hallway.
“Elena, stay here.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Elena.”
“I’m not leaving Leo.”
He understood.
Again.
She wasn’t thinking about herself.
Only the child.
“Fine.”
He looked at Victoria.
“You stay with them.”
Victoria almost laughed.
“After everything, you trust me with your son?”
Marcus stared at her.
“I trust that you’re not the biggest threat in this house.”
The words hurt.
But Victoria accepted them.
Because they were true.
Marcus followed the sound upstairs.
The guest wing was dark.
The room that had been searched earlier was still open.
He entered slowly.
The phone was sitting on the desk.
A private phone line.
One that should not have been active.
Marcus picked it up.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a voice.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Calm.
“You finally answered.”
Marcus froze.
“Who is this?”
The man laughed softly.
“You know exactly who this is.”
Marcus’s grip tightened.
“Alexander?”
A pause.
Then:
“Good.”
Marcus’s breathing changed.
The name he had heard all night was finally real.
“You’ve been watching my family.”
“I’ve been watching what belongs to me.”
Marcus’s voice became cold.
“My son is not yours.”
“No.”
The voice replied.
“Your son is the reason I had to wait.”
Marcus looked around the room.
“Where are you?”
“Closer than you think.”
The line went quiet for a moment.
Then Alexander spoke again.
“You have no idea what your father did.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“My father is dead.”
“And that does not erase what he stole.”
“What did he steal?”
Alexander’s voice became darker.
“My life.”
The call remained silent.
Marcus listened carefully.
“I spent thirty years being erased.”
A pause.
“Thirty years watching the Vance family live with everything that should have been mine.”
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
“Is that why you targeted Leo?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
And it surprised him.
“I targeted the people who wanted to use Leo.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
Alexander continued.
“Do you really think I wanted your son harmed?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
“I wanted the truth exposed.”
“By destroying my family?”
“No.”
A pause.
“By forcing you to see it.”
The call ended.
Marcus stood frozen.
Because the conversation had not sounded like a man asking for revenge.
It sounded like a man who believed he was correcting a wrong.
But that didn’t make him safe.
When Marcus returned to the study, Elena immediately saw his expression.
“What happened?”
Marcus looked at her.
“I spoke to Alexander.”
Victoria stood quickly.
“What did he say?”
Marcus was silent.
Then he answered:
“He knows about you.”
Elena’s face changed.
“Me?”
“He knows your mother investigated his past.”
Elena looked down.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you tell me your mother was involved?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Elena looked at him.
“That once you knew who I was connected to, you would see me as part of the problem.”
Marcus wanted to deny it.
But he couldn’t.
Because earlier that day…
he had almost believed exactly that.
Elena continued.
“My mother spent her life trying to uncover the truth.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“And she died before she could finish.”
The room became quiet.
Marcus softened.
“What happened to her?”
Elena looked away.
“She was in a car accident.”
Victoria suddenly looked up.
“When?”
Elena answered.
“Eight years ago.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
Because she remembered something.
A news story.
A mysterious accident involving a private investigator.
A woman who had been investigating wealthy families.
Victoria whispered:
“That wasn’t an accident.”
Everyone looked at her.
Marcus frowned.
“What did you say?”
Victoria’s face went pale.
“I remember.”
A pause.
“I remember your mother’s name.”
Elena stared.
“How?”
Victoria slowly backed away.
“Because she came to me before she died.”
The room froze.
Marcus stepped forward.
“What did she tell you?”
Victoria looked terrified.
“She told me someone inside the Vance family was dangerous.”
A long silence.
“Who?”
Victoria looked toward the dark window.
And whispered:
“She said the person everyone trusted the most…”
was the person they should fear.
Before anyone could ask another question, every light in the mansion suddenly turned off.
The security system restarted.
The monitors in the hallway flickered back on.
And on every screen appeared one message:
YOU ARE TOO LATE.
Marcus stared.
Then another line appeared.
THE SECOND TRUTH WILL BE REVEALED AT MIDNIGHT.
Elena’s heart sank.
Because she knew exactly what that meant.
Someone was not hiding anymore.
May you like
Someone wanted the Vance family to watch.
