CHAPTER 10: THE GHOST IN THE HALLWAY

The footsteps came closer.

Slow.

Steady.

Unhurried.

Whoever was walking through the darkness wasn’t running away.

They wanted to be heard.

Marcus Vance immediately moved in front of Elena and Leo.

His instincts took over.

Protect.

Defend.

Find the threat.

The old mansion had always felt safe.

Tonight, it felt like a trap.

“Stay behind me,” Marcus whispered.

Elena held Leo tightly.

The little boy buried his face against her shoulder, frightened by the strange silence.

Victoria stood frozen beside them.

For once, she had no command.

No plan.

No angry words.

Only fear.

The footsteps stopped.

A few feet away.

Hidden in the darkness.

Marcus’s voice cut through the hallway.

“Show yourself.”

No answer.

“Now.”

A quiet laugh echoed.

A familiar laugh.

Victoria’s face changed.

“No…”

Marcus looked at her.

“You know that voice?”

Victoria didn’t respond.

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then they turned back on.

Everyone froze.

Standing at the end of the hallway was a man.

Not a stranger.

Not an intruder.

Someone who belonged in the Vance estate.

Someone Marcus trusted.

David Whitmore.

The family attorney.

The man who had handled every important document for the Vance family.

The man who had helped build their fortune.

Marcus stared at him.

“David.”

The lawyer adjusted his suit jacket calmly.

“Marcus.”

His voice was relaxed.

Almost friendly.

As if he hadn’t just terrified everyone in the house.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You.”

David looked at her.

“Hello, Victoria.”

Her face turned pale.

“You were the one.”

Marcus’s eyes moved between them.

“What is going on?”

David smiled slightly.

“I was hoping you would figure it out sooner.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Figure out what?”

“That your family has been built on secrets.”

The hallway became silent.

Marcus took a step forward.

“You broke into my house.”

David shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I walked into a house where I have been welcomed for fifteen years.”

The words hit harder because they were true.

David knew the estate.

He knew the security.

He knew the family.

He knew everything.

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“You manipulated my wife.”

David looked at Victoria.

“She was easy to manipulate.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with anger.

“You lied to me.”

David smiled.

“I told you exactly what you wanted to hear.”

Victoria stepped toward him.

“You made me believe Elena was dangerous.”

“No.”

David corrected her.

“You wanted to believe she was dangerous.”

The words silenced her.

Because deep down, she knew it was true.

Marcus looked at David.

“What was your goal?”

David glanced toward Leo.

And that small movement made Marcus’s entire body tense.

“Stay away from my son.”

David smiled.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The protective father.”

David slowly walked closer.

“You finally understand what everyone else has known for years.”

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“Explain.”

David stopped.

“Leo is not just your son.”

A pause.

“He is the future of the Vance family.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You mean his inheritance.”

“Among other things.”

Elena felt a chill.

“What are you talking about?”

David looked at her.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

Marcus turned.

“Know what?”

David smiled.

“The reason Elena was hired.”

The hallway went silent.

Elena looked confused.

“What?”

David continued.

“Do you really think you were hired because Marcus needed a nanny?”

Marcus stared at him.

“Careful.”

But David ignored the warning.

“You were chosen because you were the only person who could get close enough to Leo without raising suspicion.”

Elena shook her head.

“That’s not true.”

David looked at her.

“Isn’t it?”

Marcus stepped between them.

“Stop.”

David laughed softly.

“You still don’t see it.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“See what?”

David reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

But instead of a weapon, he pulled out an old photograph.

He threw it onto the table beside them.

Marcus looked down.

And his expression changed.

The photo showed a younger version of his father.

Standing beside a woman Marcus had never seen before.

And in the woman’s arms…

was a baby.

Marcus picked up the photograph.

His hands tightened.

“Who is this?”

David smiled.

“That is the truth your father spent his entire life hiding.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Marcus?”

He didn’t answer.

Because he recognized something.

The baby in the photograph.

The date written on the back.

The family name.

Everything connected.

David leaned closer.

“Your father had another child.”

The hallway went completely silent.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“That’s impossible.”

David shook his head.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“It was simply hidden.”

Elena looked at Marcus.

“What does this have to do with Leo?”

David’s smile disappeared.

“Everything.”

A long pause.

“Because that child grew up.”

Marcus slowly looked at him.

And suddenly, the answer became terrifying.

The person who had been trying to control the Vance family.

The person who knew every secret.

The person who had been moving behind the scenes.

Was not trying to steal Leo’s money.

They were trying to claim what they believed belonged to them.

David looked at Marcus.

“You have been protecting the wrong people.”

Then he turned toward the darkness behind him.

“And soon, Marcus…”

His voice became almost a whisper.

“You’ll meet the person who has been waiting years to take back the Vance name.”

Marcus held the photograph tightly.

Because for the first time in his life…

he realized his family history might be a lie.

And the biggest threat to his son…

May you like

might share his own blood.
