CHAPTER 3: THE ENVELOPE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Marcus Vance had faced angry investors, hostile competitors, and business deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
But nothing prepared him for the feeling he had when he held that envelope.
Because Victoria wasn’t smiling like a wife trying to prove a point.
She was smiling like someone who believed she had already won.
And Marcus hated that.
Slowly, he turned the envelope over in his hand.
“What is this?”
Victoria leaned against the staircase railing.
“You’ll find out.”
Marcus looked at her coldly.
“I asked you a question.”
Her smile faded slightly.
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Victoria glanced at Elena.
“Proof that the person you trusted inside this house has been lying to you.”
Elena felt her stomach tighten.
“Mr. Vance, I swear I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
Victoria immediately interrupted.
“Of course you don’t.”
Her voice was filled with fake sympathy.
“You’re very good at pretending.”
Marcus looked between them.
The room felt like it was closing in.
For years, he had believed he understood the people around him.
But standing there, watching two women he trusted face each other, he realized one of them had been hiding something.
The question was…
Who?
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of printed documents.
He pulled out the first page.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
Elena noticed the change in his expression.
“Mr. Vance?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Victoria watched him carefully.
“Interesting, isn’t it?”
Marcus slowly looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
Victoria crossed her arms.
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
His voice was sharper now.
“Where did you get it?”
For the first time, Victoria hesitated.
Only for a second.
But Marcus noticed.
“I asked you a question.”
She looked away.
“It was sent to me.”
“By who?”
“Someone who knows the truth.”
Marcus looked back at the papers.
The documents showed Elena’s employment history.
Her old addresses.
Her previous jobs.
But something was wrong.
The information wasn’t matching what he knew.
There were missing years.
Unexplained gaps.
And one accusation that made the room go silent.
“Financial fraud?”
Elena’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Victoria slowly smiled.
“There it is.”
Elena stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus raised his hand.
“Wait.”
His eyes stayed on the paper.
The accusation claimed Elena had been involved in stealing money from a former employer.
A serious crime.
A crime that could destroy someone’s reputation.
But Marcus knew something Victoria didn’t.
He knew how to investigate.
He knew how to find the truth.
And he knew documents could be manipulated.
“Did you verify this?”
Victoria looked surprised.
“What?”
“Did you call the company listed here?”
She paused.
“Why would I need to?”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Because you’re showing me an accusation, not evidence.”
The confidence on Victoria’s face cracked.
Just slightly.
Elena stared at Marcus.
She had expected doubt.
She had expected suspicion.
But he wasn’t attacking her.
He was questioning the information.
Victoria noticed too.
And she didn’t like it.
“You’re defending her?”
“No.”
Marcus placed the documents on the table.
“I’m looking for the truth.”
Victoria walked closer.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
Marcus looked at her.
“This isn’t about you.”
Her expression hardened.
“Everything becomes about me when someone in this house betrays our family.”
Elena shook her head.
“I would never hurt Leo.”
Victoria laughed.
“You keep saying his name like that makes you innocent.”
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Tell me yourself.”
Elena took a deep breath.
“I have worked for your family because I needed a job. But Leo became important to me because he’s a child who needs someone who cares about him.”
She looked down at the little boy.
“I would never do anything to harm him.”
Her voice cracked.
“Never.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Leo reached his small hand toward Elena.
That simple action said more than any document could.
Marcus noticed.
Victoria noticed too.
And the anger on her face returned.
“You’re letting a child manipulate your judgment?”
Marcus looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m watching who makes him feel safe.”
Victoria’s face tightened.
She stepped closer to Marcus.
“You think you know everything.”
“No.”
Marcus looked directly into her eyes.
“But I know something is wrong.”
The words hit her.
Because they were not the words of a husband defending his wife.
They were the words of a man investigating someone he no longer trusted.
Victoria’s expression changed.
The plan was supposed to be simple.
Destroy Elena’s reputation.
Make Marcus question her.
Remove the person protecting Leo.
But Marcus wasn’t reacting the way she expected.
So Victoria changed tactics.
She lowered her voice.
“Fine.”
Marcus watched her.
“What?”
“If you want the truth…”
She smiled slowly.
“Ask Elena where she was the night Leo disappeared for twenty minutes.”
Elena froze.
Marcus turned sharply.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria looked at Elena.
“Tell him.”
The color drained from Elena’s face.
Because there was a memory she had tried very hard to forget.
A night when Leo vanished inside the estate.
A night when everyone blamed her.
A night when someone had secretly watched her.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“I can explain.”
Victoria smiled.
Because she knew she had finally found the crack.
May you like
And she was ready to break it wide open.
