CHAPTER 14: THE FINAL BETRAYAL

The basement was silent.

Too silent.

Marcus Vance stood frozen in the center of the hidden room, staring at the empty chair where Elena’s mother had been only seconds before.

A woman who had been missing for years.

A woman who was supposed to be dead.

A woman who had just accused someone standing beside them.

Victoria.

Elena’s breathing became unsteady.

“No…”

She shook her head slowly.

“No, that can’t be true.”

Victoria looked at her.

“Elena…”

But Elena stepped back.

“Don’t.”

Her voice cracked.

“You knew?”

Victoria’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Pain.

“I didn’t know she was alive.”

Marcus immediately looked at her.

“But you knew something.”

Victoria didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“Victoria.”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The word fell like a stone.

Elena stared at her.

“How long?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Years.”

Elena’s eyes filled with disbelief.

“My mother disappeared eight years ago.”

“I know.”

“And you knew something?”

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.”

Elena’s voice became louder.

“You let me believe she was dead.”

“I thought she was.”

“Thought?”

Elena stepped closer.

“You thought my mother was dead while you were living your perfect life in this house?”

Victoria looked down.

“I was wrong.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“You were wrong?”

Her voice trembled.

“You ruined my life with one mistake?”

Marcus watched silently.

Because for the first time, he realized something.

Victoria’s lies were not just about Leo.

They went deeper.

Much deeper.

Marcus turned toward Victoria.

“Tell me everything.”

She looked at him.

“Marcus…”

“Everything.”

His voice was firm.

“No more secrets.”

Victoria took a shaky breath.

“I met Elena’s mother eight years ago.”

Elena stared.

“Why?”

“Because she came to me.”

Victoria walked toward the old table.

“She had evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Victoria looked at Marcus.

“Your father.”

The room became quiet.

“She believed Richard Vance was hiding something.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“My father.”

Victoria nodded.

“She believed Alexander wasn’t the only secret.”

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria looked at her.

“It means your mother discovered someone else was controlling the family.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?”

Victoria hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone inside your father’s inner circle.”

Marcus’s mind raced.

“David?”

“No.”

Victoria shook her head.

“David was only a piece.”

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“Then who?”

Before Victoria could answer, the basement speakers suddenly turned on.

A voice filled the room.

A voice everyone recognized.

David Whitmore.

“Still asking the wrong questions, Marcus.”

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked around.

“David.”

The voice laughed.

“You always were too trusting.”

Victoria’s face turned pale.

“You’re still here?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because this is where everything began.”

The old speakers crackled.

Then a video appeared on the wall.

An old recording.

A younger Richard Vance appeared on the screen.

Standing beside him was another man.

Marcus stared.

He didn’t recognize him.

But Victoria did.

Her face changed instantly.

“No…”

Marcus looked at her.

“Who is that?”

Victoria whispered:

“Your father’s business partner.”

The video continued.

The two men were arguing.

Then Richard said something that shocked everyone.

“I will not let him take my son’s inheritance.”

The other man replied:

“Then you should have never chosen Marcus.”

The video stopped.

Marcus stood still.

The words repeated in his mind.

Never chosen Marcus.

David’s voice returned.

“Do you understand now?”

Marcus looked at the screen.

“What are you trying to prove?”

“That your father didn’t hide Alexander because he was dangerous.”

A pause.

“He hid him because Alexander knew the truth.”

Elena whispered:

“The truth about what?”

The speakers went silent.

Then David answered.

“The truth that Marcus Vance was never supposed to inherit the empire.”

Everyone froze.

Marcus’s face changed.

“What?”

David continued.

“Your father changed the will.”

Victoria stepped back.

“No…”

“Yes.”

David’s voice became colder.

“He removed Alexander’s name.”

Marcus looked at the old video.

“Why?”

“Because someone convinced him Alexander was a threat.”

The room became silent.

Elena slowly understood.

“Someone manipulated Richard.”

“Yes.”

David answered.

“And that person has been controlling this family ever since.”

Marcus clenched his fists.

“Who?”

The speakers went silent.

Then one final message appeared on the screen.

A name.

A name that made Victoria collapse into silence.

A name that Marcus had never expected.

VIVIAN VANCE.

Marcus stared.

“My grandmother?”

David’s voice whispered:

“The woman who created the Vance empire.”

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was finally becoming clear.

This was never a battle between Marcus and Alexander.

It was never about Elena.

It was never even about Leo.

It started with one woman who wanted absolute control.

And now Marcus finally understood.

The greatest enemy of the Vance family…

had never been outside the house.

May you like

She had built it.
