THE MAN WHO KNEW MY FATHER / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - THE SECRET MY FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

For the first time in my life…

I questioned everything.

My father.

My marriage.

My entire past.

Because suddenly, every memory had another meaning.

Michael drove me to an old office building downtown.

I looked outside the window.

“Where are we going?”

“To a place your father trusted.”

I frowned.

“Why haven’t I heard about it?”

“Because nobody was supposed to know.”

That sentence made me nervous.

The elevator stopped on the top floor.

The office was empty.

Dust covered the desks.

But everything was still there.

Photos.

Files.

Books.

My father’s things.

I walked slowly through the room.

I felt like I had stepped into the past.

Michael opened a hidden drawer behind a bookshelf.

Inside was a small box.

My name was written on it.

Emma.

My hands started shaking.

“He left this for me?”

Michael nodded.

“When?”

“The week before he died.”

I opened the box.

Inside was a letter.

And a small recording device.

I pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“Emma.”

I covered my mouth.

Hearing his voice again broke something inside me.

“If you’re hearing this, it means I wasn’t able to tell you everything myself.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“I need you to understand something.”

A pause.

“Trust is not something people earn with words.”

Another pause.

“They earn it with actions.”

I looked at Michael.

The recording continued.

“Daniel is not the only danger.”

My body froze.

“He is only a piece of the problem.”

The room felt smaller.

“Someone close to our family has been watching us for years.”

My fingers tightened around the device.

“Emma, if you ever feel alone…”

My father’s voice became emotional.

“Remember this.”

“You are not weak because you trusted people.”

“You are strong because you survived when they betrayed you.”

The recording ended.

I stood there crying.

Michael stayed silent.

After a few moments, I looked at him.

“Who was he talking about?”

Michael didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Michael.”

He slowly opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A family event from years ago.

My father.

Me.

Daniel.

And another person.

I looked closer.

My breathing stopped.

Because standing behind my father…

Was Vanessa.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

It was the person standing beside her.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been pretending to help me.

Someone who had been close to me since childhood.

Michael whispered:

“Emma…”

May you like

“The person your father feared most…”

“Was someone you never thought you needed protection from.”
