THE MAN WHO KNEW MY FATHER / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS WAITING

I used to believe betrayal was loud.

I thought it came with shouting.

Arguments.

Slamming doors.

Obvious signs.

But the worst betrayals are quiet.

They happen while someone is smiling at you.

While they tell you they love you.

While they sit across from you at dinner and pretend everything is normal.

That was Daniel.

And for three years, I had been living beside someone who had been hiding an entire life from me.

I stared at the documents on Michael’s desk.

My hands were cold.

“Tell me everything.”

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded.

“I deserve the truth.”

He leaned back.

“Your father built Carter Holdings from nothing.”

I knew that.

Everyone knew that.

My father was a businessman.

A respected one.

But Michael continued.

“He also knew that success attracts people who don’t care about you.”

I looked at the documents.

“Daniel?”

Michael nodded.

“Your father never accused him publicly.”

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted proof.”

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“So he knew.”

“Yes.”

“And he never told me?”

Michael looked away.

“Your father loved you more than anything.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

The room became quiet.

Finally, Michael said:

“He was afraid you would choose love over the truth.”

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

I would have.

I loved Daniel.

I defended him.

I ignored every warning sign.

The late nights.

The secret calls.

The sudden business trips.

The way he started controlling our finances.

I always found an excuse.

Because admitting the truth meant admitting I was wrong.

Michael opened another file.

“This is where Vanessa comes in.”

I looked at the picture.

Vanessa smiling beside Daniel.

“She worked for your father.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She was an assistant in one of his companies.”

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It will.”

Michael placed another picture down.

A younger Vanessa.

Standing beside my father.

“She was fired eight years ago.”

“Why?”

Michael’s expression hardened.

“Because she stole confidential information.”

I stared at the photo.

“She blamed my father?”

“Yes.”

“And now she’s back?”

Michael nodded.

“Your husband helped her get close to you.”

I felt my stomach twist.

“Why?”

Michael looked directly at me.

“Because they wanted access.”

“To what?”

He pointed at the folder.

“Your inheritance.”

I sat there silently.

The baby moved inside me.

A reminder that I couldn’t fall apart.

Not now.

Not anymore.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Michael immediately reached for it.

“Don’t answer.”

I looked at the screen.

“Why?”

“Because they already know where you are.”

My heart started beating faster.

The phone kept ringing.

Again.

Again.

Then a message appeared.

One sentence.

A sentence that made my blood freeze.

Emma, you should have stayed quiet.

I looked at Michael.

“How did they know?”

Michael stood up.

And for the first time since I met him…

I saw anger.

Real anger.

“Because someone inside my team is helping them.”

My eyes widened.

“Your team?”

He nodded.

“And now we know this is bigger than Daniel.”

The room went silent.

Then Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed after five seconds.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Send me the footage.”

He hung up.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Someone broke into your apartment.”

My breathing stopped.

“Daniel?”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

He looked at the security footage appearing on his tablet.

And my blood turned cold.

May you like

Because the person entering my apartment was someone I trusted.
