Chapter 1 - THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The sound of my husband breaking my arm was quieter than the sound of my own fear.
I always imagined the worst moment of my life would come with screaming.
A car accident.
A hospital room.
A phone call in the middle of the night.
I never imagined it would happen inside my own home.
With my own husband standing above me.
With another woman watching.
The only sound in my apartment was the small pop coming from my wrist.
For a second, I didn’t understand what happened.
My brain refused to accept it.
Then the pain arrived.
A sharp, burning pain that traveled from my hand all the way up my arm.
I dropped to the marble floor.
My red dress spread around me.
My good hand immediately grabbed my broken wrist.
“Daniel…”
My voice was barely a whisper.
My husband stood frozen in front of me.
His chest moved up and down.
His jaw was tight.
In his hand was a whiskey glass.
Like this was just another argument.
Like I was not lying on the floor because of him.
“Daniel,” I said again.
“Call someone.”
He stared at me.
“What?”
“My arm…”
I swallowed the tears.
“I think you broke my arm.”
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Vanessa laughed.
Actually laughed.
I looked past Daniel and saw her standing near my kitchen island.
She looked perfect.
Black designer dress.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
The kind of woman who walked into a room and expected everyone else to move aside.
She looked at me like I was a problem she wanted removed.
“Oh my God,” she said.
“She’s serious.”
I stared at her.
“Who are you?”
Vanessa smiled.
“You still don’t know?”
My stomach dropped.
Daniel looked away.
That hurt.
More than the pain.
More than my arm.
Because that was the moment I realized my husband wasn’t embarrassed.
He wasn’t shocked.
He wasn’t sorry.
He was protecting her.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“Tell me she’s not what I think she is.”
Nothing.
No answer.
No defense.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Honestly, Daniel, I don’t understand why you stayed married this long.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Married?”
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that what this is?”
He finally spoke.
“Emma, don’t make this dramatic.”
I almost laughed.
Dramatic.
That was the word he chose.
Not sorry.
Not forgive me.
Not are you okay.
Dramatic.
I slowly pushed myself up.
Pain exploded through my arm.
I almost collapsed.
But something inside me refused to stay on that floor.
I looked toward the bathroom.
Daniel noticed.
“Where are you going?”
I didn’t answer.
I moved.
One step.
Then another.
“Emma.”
His voice became colder.
“Don’t do this.”
I reached the bathroom door.
My hand was shaking.
I closed it.
Locked it.
A second later—
BANG.
His fist hit the door.
“Open it.”
I backed away.
Another bang.
“Emma!”
I covered my mouth to stop myself from crying.
Then I looked into the mirror.
And I saw someone I barely recognized.
A woman with swollen lips.
Tears running down her face.
A broken arm.
A torn dress.
And a seven-month pregnant belly.
My baby moved.
A tiny kick.
I placed my hand over my stomach.
“Mommy’s here.”
That was when I remembered my father.
The last conversation we ever had.
I was sixteen.
He sat across from me in his office.
A serious look on his face.
“If something ever happens to you,” he said, “you call one person.”
I laughed.
“Dad, you act like I’m in danger.”
He didn’t laugh.
“Promise me.”
I sighed.
“Okay. Who?”
He wrote down a number.
A name.
Michael Russo.
“My oldest friend.”
I had kept that number for twelve years.
Never used it.
Until tonight.
My fingers trembled as I pressed call.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Then a deep voice answered.
“Who is this?”
I closed my eyes.
“It’s Emma.”
Silence.
Then—
“Emma Carter?”
Hearing my father’s last name made me break.
“Yes.”
His voice changed immediately.
“What happened?”
I looked at the bathroom door.
Daniel was still outside.
Still angry.
Still demanding.
I whispered:
“My husband.”
The silence that followed scared me more than anything.
Then Michael Russo spoke.
“Where are you?”
I gave him my address.
“Are you hurt?”
“Yes.”
“How badly?”
“My arm is broken.”
A pause.
Then the question I knew was coming.
“Who did it?”
I closed my eyes.
“My husband.”
His breathing changed.
Not panic.
Not surprise.
Something controlled.
Something dangerous.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“Stay exactly where you are.”
“Mr. Russo…”
“You are James Carter’s daughter.”
My tears fell.
“And nobody touches James Carter’s daughter.”
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
I didn’t know who Michael Russo really was.
But I knew one thing.
My father trusted him.
And thirty-five minutes later…
Black SUVs surrounded my building.
May you like
And everyone inside my apartment was about to learn why.
