Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN MY FATHER’S FILE

I spent the night in a hotel.
Not because I wanted to leave my home.
Because I finally understood something.
The place I called home was never safe.
Michael arranged everything.
Doctor.
Security.
A lawyer.
Everything happened so quickly that my mind couldn’t keep up.
The next morning, I sat in a private office overlooking Manhattan.
A doctor had placed my arm in a cast.
My baby was okay.
That was the only thing keeping me together.
Michael placed a folder on the table.
“This belonged to your father.”
I touched it.
My fingers shook.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Michael looked down.
“Because he was trying to protect you.”
I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Bank records.
And one letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
Emma,
If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
My heart stopped.
Michael watched me carefully.
“He wrote that two years before he died.”
I continued reading.
I want you to understand something.
People will smile at you.
They will tell you they love you.
But money reveals people.
Power reveals people.
And when you become vulnerable…
That is when you learn who truly stands beside you.
My eyes filled.
Michael spoke softly.
“Your father suspected Daniel.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“He never trusted him.”
I shook my head.
“No. Daniel loved me.”
Michael didn’t argue.
He just opened another document.
“Then explain this.”
A signature.
A transfer.
Daniel’s company.
My account.
Millions missing.
I felt sick.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
I covered my mouth.
Three years.
My husband had been planning this while sleeping beside me.
While telling me everything was fine.
Michael leaned forward.
“Emma, I need you to prepare yourself.”
“For what?”
He looked at the final page.
“The reason your father created this file…”
He pushed it toward me.
“…was because Daniel wasn’t the only person involved.”
I stared at the page.
There was another name.
A name I knew.
A name that made my blood run cold.
Vanessa.
Michael’s voice became quiet.
“She’s not his affair.”
I looked at him.
“Then what is she?”
He slowly answered.
“Your father’s biggest unfinished problem.”
I stopped breathing.
Because at that moment…
I realized my husband hadn’t just betrayed me.
He had brought someone into my life who had been waiting years for a chance to destroy my family.

And now…
She knew I was still alive.
