Chapter 2 - THE MAN MY FATHER TRUSTED

The first thing I noticed was the silence.
My building was never silent.
Someone was always arguing.
Someone was always playing music.
Someone was always walking through the hallway.
But that night…
Nothing.
I stood behind my apartment door with my broken arm pressed against my chest.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Not rushed.
Daniel stopped yelling.
That alone frightened me.
Because Daniel was never quiet.
The door opened.
Not because Daniel opened it.
Because someone else did.
A tall man stepped inside.
Late sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Calm eyes.
But there was something about him.
Something that made the entire room feel smaller.
“Emma?”
My knees almost gave out.
“Mr. Russo?”
He looked at me.
And for a second, I didn’t see a powerful attorney.
I saw my father’s friend.
A man who knew my father.
A man who knew the old version of my life.
Then his eyes moved to my arm.
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Who did this?”
Daniel stepped forward.
“She fell.”
Michael looked at him.
Just looked.
And Daniel stopped.
“I said she fell.”
Michael slowly turned back to me.
“Emma.”
His voice was gentle.
“Did you fall?”
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at Michael.
“No.”
The room became cold.
“She didn’t fall.”
Michael nodded.
“Okay.”
One word.
But somehow it carried more power than yelling.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Who exactly are you?”
Michael looked at her.
“I’m the person Emma called.”
She laughed.
“Are you here to threaten us?”
Michael smiled slightly.
“No.”
He looked around the apartment.
“I’m here because someone forgot who they hurt.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
Michael looked directly at him.
“Actually…”
He took a step closer.
“I know exactly who I’m dealing with.”
Daniel froze.
Because Michael knew something.
Something Daniel didn’t expect.
Michael looked at me.
“Emma, your father was right about one thing.”
“What?”
“He trusted the wrong people sometimes.”
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?”
Before he answered, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
He showed me the message.
A bank transfer.
A company record.
Daniel’s name.
And another name.
Vanessa.
My stomach turned.
Michael looked at Daniel.
“You weren’t just cheating on her.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You were stealing from her.”
I looked at my husband.
“What?”
Daniel’s face became pale.
“Emma, don’t listen to him.”
Michael placed the phone on the table.
“Your father created a trust fund for you before he died.”
My breathing stopped.
“What?”
Daniel looked away.
Michael continued.
“And someone has been moving money from that account for three years.”
I felt the room spinning.
“No…”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma, he’s lying.”
Michael didn’t even look at him.
“Tomorrow morning, you’ll see the proof.”
Then he turned toward the door.
“Tonight, you are leaving this apartment.”
Daniel laughed.
“You think you can just walk in here and order me around?”
Michael stopped.
Then he said something quietly.
Something that made Daniel’s confidence disappear.
“Your problem, Daniel, is that you thought Emma had nobody.”
He looked back.
“But you forgot…”
May you like
“Her father left behind friends.”
