Chapter 8 - The Founder's Room

The explosion rolled through the building like distant thunder.

The executive floor trembled beneath their feet.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Emergency lights painted the boardroom in flashing shades of crimson.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then every phone lost its signal.

Daniel looked down at his screen.

"No network."

Lawson pressed his radio again.

"Security, respond."

Only static answered.

Mateo's eyes never left Samuel.

"You knew this would happen."

Samuel slowly picked up the brass key.

"I knew someone would eventually become desperate."

"Who?"

Samuel smiled faintly.

"That's the wrong question."

Mateo stepped closer.

"Then give me the right one."

Samuel held the key between two fingers.

"Ask who benefits if the archive disappears forever."

Silence settled over the room.

Richard was the first to speak.

"If the Founder's Room contains the original records..."

"...then destroying it erases decades of evidence."

Daniel nodded.

"And whoever planned the explosion doesn't want us reaching it first."

Samuel looked toward the emergency exit.

"Exactly."

Mateo extended his hand.

"The key."

Samuel studied him for several seconds.

Then, to everyone's surprise, he placed the old brass key in Mateo's palm.

Elena frowned.

"Why would you do that?"

Samuel looked directly at her.

"Because if I keep it..."

"...everyone assumes I'm hiding something."

"And if Mateo carries it..."

"...he'll discover whether the Rivera family deserves to survive."

Those words lingered in the air.

Lawson motioned toward the hallway.

"We're wasting time."

"If the explosion started below us, every minute matters."

Mateo nodded.

"Daniel."

"Get Sofia out of the building."

Daniel immediately objected.

"The garage may not be secure."

"Then take the rooftop."

"The helicopter?"

"Now."

Elena's expression tightened.

"I'll go with her."

Mateo looked at her.

"No."

She stared back.

"I'm not leaving you."

"This isn't your fight."

A sad smile crossed Elena's face.

"It became my fight twelve years ago."

Mateo couldn't argue with that.

He finally nodded.

"Then we stay together."

Daniel hurried toward the secure conference suite where Sofia was waiting.

The remaining group moved into the executive hallway.

Employees rushed toward emergency stairwells.

Fire alarms echoed through every floor.

Smoke had begun creeping upward through the ventilation system.

Lawson examined the emergency building map.

"The original blueprints aren't here."

Samuel pointed toward a painting hanging at the end of the corridor.

"Behind that wall."

Everyone turned.

The enormous oil painting depicted the first Rivera steel mill.

Lawson and two guards lifted it aside.

Hidden behind the frame was an old iron door.

No electronic lock.

No keypad.

Only a heavy brass keyhole.

Mateo inserted the key.

It resisted.

Then turned with a loud metallic click.

The door slowly opened.

A cold draft escaped from the darkness.

Stone stairs descended beneath headquarters.

Elena looked down.

"This place has been here the entire time."

Samuel answered quietly.

"Long before any of us."

Lawson activated his flashlight.

"I'll lead."

"No."

Mateo stepped forward.

"I open this."

Samuel watched him carefully.

"Whatever waits below..."

"...it won't only be records."

Mateo met his uncle's eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Samuel didn't answer.

Instead, he remained standing in the hallway.

"Aren't you coming?"

Mateo asked.

Samuel shook his head.

"I've spent too many years underground."

"I'm staying here."

Mateo searched his face.

For the first time, Samuel looked tired.

Older.

Almost defeated.

Lawson descended first.

Mateo followed.

Elena stayed immediately behind him.

Richard, Isabel, and two board members came next.

The iron door closed above them with a deep echo.

The staircase wound downward farther than anyone expected.

Concrete eventually gave way to old stone.

Moisture covered the walls.

The air smelled of dust and forgotten paper.

After nearly five minutes, the stairs ended.

A massive steel vault stood before them.

Across its center were engraved words.

FOUNDER'S ARCHIVE

1948

Lawson examined the mechanism.

"No electronics."

Mateo inserted the brass key again.

This time, it fit perfectly.

The vault unlocked with a heavy rumble.

The thick door slowly swung inward.

Everyone fell silent.

The room beyond looked untouched by time.

Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.

Leather-bound ledgers filled one wall.

Metal filing cabinets lined another.

Glass display cases held photographs, contracts, and handwritten journals.

At the center of the archive stood a large oak desk.

Everything was covered in a thin layer of dust.

Except one thing.

An open ledger.

Someone had been here recently.

Lawson scanned the room.

"No sign of forced entry."

Elena approached the desk.

A single page had been marked with a red ribbon.

She read the heading aloud.

"Family Succession Protocol."

Mateo stepped beside her.

The document carried his father's signature.

And beneath it...

...his grandfather's.

Richard adjusted his glasses.

"This is the original trust."

Mateo turned the page carefully.

His eyes widened.

The version differed from every copy he'd ever seen.

Entire sections had been removed from the documents he'd received after his father's death.

Daniel's voice suddenly crackled through Mateo's emergency radio.

"Mateo!"

The signal was weak but understandable.

"We're on the rooftop."

"Sofia is safe."

Mateo exhaled.

"Good."

"But..."

Daniel's voice grew tense.

"There's someone here asking for her."

Mateo froze.

"Who?"

"He has identification."

"He claims to be a federal marshal."

Lawson looked sharply at Mateo.

"The real agents are downstairs."

Daniel continued.

"He says Sofia must be taken into protective custody."

Elena's face drained of color.

"Don't let him near her."

Daniel answered immediately.

"I wasn't planning to."

The transmission dissolved into static.

Silence returned.

Mateo gripped the radio tightly.

"We need to get back upstairs."

Richard interrupted.

"Wait."

He pointed toward the final page of the trust.

"There."

Everyone looked.

Near the bottom of the document, beneath several signatures, was a handwritten note added by Mateo's father.

It had never appeared in any official copy.

Mateo slowly read it aloud.

"If this document is ever opened because my son is no longer safe, then the greatest threat does not come from outside the Rivera family."

His voice faltered.

He continued.

"It comes from the person standing closest to him."

The room fell silent.

Every instinctively looked around.

Lawson tightened his grip on his weapon.

Isabel slowly backed away.

Elena glanced toward the vault entrance.

The heavy steel door...

...was beginning to close by itself.

Before anyone could reach it, the locking mechanism slammed into place with a deafening boom.

They were trapped inside the Founder's Room.

Then a calm voice echoed through hidden speakers in the ceiling.

"Good evening, Mateo."

Everyone recognized it instantly.

Samuel Rivera.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...you've just entered the final test my brother and I designed years ago."

Elena looked toward the ceiling in disbelief.

Mateo's heart pounded.

Samuel's recorded voice continued.

"And before you decide whom to trust..."

"...remember this."

May you like

"The person who betrayed your father..."

"...is already inside that room with you."
