Chapter 12 - The Man at the Glass Doors

The words echoed through the hidden chamber.

"He says he's Lucas Rivera."

Mateo tightened his grip on the letter.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Richard was the first to recover.

"That's impossible."

Lawson looked toward the ladder leading back to the archive.

"Unless it isn't."

Elena studied Mateo's face.

"What are you thinking?"

Mateo folded the letter carefully and slipped it into the inside pocket of his jacket.

"I'm thinking someone wants me to make a decision without enough information."

Richard nodded.

"That's exactly how Samuel has always operated."

Mateo looked at the others.

"We leave together."

"No one separates."

Lawson climbed the ladder first.

Within minutes, the group returned to the Founder's Room.

The emergency lights still flickered overhead.

The vault door remained locked.

Lawson inspected the control panel once more.

"There has to be a manual release."

Isabel walked toward the wall beside the entrance.

"I remember something."

She brushed years of dust from a bronze plaque.

Hidden beneath it was a small mechanical lever.

She pulled it.

A deep metallic rumble rolled through the chamber.

The vault door slowly unlocked.

Fresh air drifted inside.

Mateo looked at Isabel.

"You've been here before."

She lowered her eyes.

"Only once."

"Samuel brought me here after your father's funeral."

"What did he show you?"

"The trust."

"And?"

"He said some truths protected families."

She looked at Elena.

"I didn't realize they were destroying one."

No one judged her.

Not anymore.

There would be time later for regret.

Right now, there was only time for action.

The group hurried back up the stone staircase.

When they reached the executive hallway, the building was under tighter security than before.

Federal agents moved through the corridors carrying evidence boxes.

Company employees stood behind temporary barriers.

News helicopters circled outside the glass walls.

Daniel was waiting near the executive elevators.

Sofia stood beside him.

The moment Elena appeared, Sofia ran into her arms.

"I knew you'd come back."

Elena embraced her tightly.

"I always will."

Mateo watched them for a moment before turning to Daniel.

"Where is he?"

Daniel pointed toward the reception lounge at the end of the corridor.

"He refused to enter the boardroom."

"He said he would only speak to you."

"Did he give a reason?"

Daniel nodded.

"He said..."

"...'I've already lost one brother. I won't lose another in front of strangers.'"

Richard's face paled.

Mateo inhaled slowly.

"Is he alone?"

"As far as we can tell."

Lawson added quietly,

"We searched him."

"No weapons."

"Only an old leather briefcase."

Mateo looked at Elena.

"I need to meet him."

She nodded.

"But not alone."

Lawson agreed.

"I'll stay outside."

Mateo walked toward the reception lounge.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The glass doors slid open.

A man stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

His hair was silver.

His posture was straight.

He wore a simple charcoal overcoat instead of an expensive suit.

He wasn't staring at the skyline.

He was looking at an old family photograph resting in his hands.

Without turning around, he spoke.

"You have Gabriel's voice."

Mateo stopped.

The stranger slowly faced him.

His eyes carried decades of quiet sorrow.

Not fear.

Not arrogance.

Only exhaustion.

"You must be Lucas."

The man nodded once.

"And you must be Mateo."

Neither moved.

The silence between them felt strangely familiar.

Lucas smiled faintly.

"You look more like your mother than your father."

Mateo frowned.

"You knew her?"

"I danced at your parents' wedding."

The answer came so naturally that it disarmed him.

Mateo studied the man's face.

There was something unmistakably Rivera about him.

The eyes.

The jawline.

The calm way he held himself.

"I found your letter."

Lucas looked relieved.

"Then you know Samuel wasn't the beginning."

"I know very little."

Lucas nodded.

"That's why I'm here."

Mateo glanced toward the leather briefcase.

"What's inside?"

"The truth."

Mateo almost smiled.

"Everyone keeps saying that tonight."

"This time, I brought evidence."

Lucas opened the case slowly.

Inside were several aging folders.

A collection of cassette tapes.

A leather-bound journal.

And one sealed envelope.

Across the front was written a single line.

For Mateo Rivera—Only After Samuel Speaks.

Mateo looked up.

"You've been waiting."

"For years."

"Why now?"

Lucas closed the briefcase.

"Because Samuel finally made the one mistake I prayed he never would."

"What mistake?"

"He involved a child."

Across the hallway, Elena watched through the glass.

She couldn't hear the conversation.

But she could see Lucas's expression.

It wasn't the face of a man seeking power.

It was the face of someone carrying grief for far too long.

Sofia tugged gently on Elena's sleeve.

"Who's that?"

Elena looked down.

"I don't know yet."

Sofia watched Lucas carefully.

"He looks lonely."

Elena said nothing.

Inside the lounge, Mateo folded his arms.

"If you're innocent..."

"...why disappear for forty years?"

Lucas looked out at the city lights.

"I didn't disappear."

"I was hidden."

"By Samuel?"

Lucas shook his head.

"No."

"By Gabriel."

Mateo's heartbeat stopped.

"My father?"

Lucas nodded.

"He believed it was the only way to keep me alive."

Before Mateo could ask another question, the executive doors burst open.

A federal agent hurried toward them.

"Mr. Rivera."

Mateo turned.

"What is it?"

"We've just received a warrant."

"For Samuel?"

The agent shook his head.

"No."

He looked directly at Lucas.

"For him."

The room fell silent.

Lucas closed his eyes.

He didn't look surprised.

He looked as though he had been expecting this moment for decades.

The agent unfolded the document.

"Lucas Rivera..."

"...you're being taken into custody in connection with the disappearance of Alejandro Rivera's original testament."

Mateo stared at the warrant.

Then at Lucas.

Lucas gave a weary smile.

"I told you I brought the truth."

He looked at the briefcase on the table.

"But the truth has always had a price."

Outside the lounge, Samuel Rivera appeared at the far end of the executive corridor.

He had somehow slipped past the investigators.

Their eyes met across the crowded hallway.

Samuel smiled.

Not with triumph.

With recognition.

Then he quietly said words that only Mateo could hear.

May you like

"Don't let him open the last envelope."

Samuel turned and disappeared into the crowd before anyone could stop him.
