Chapter 11 - The Visitor Named Lucas

No one spoke.
The name hung in the air like an echo from another lifetime.
Lucas.
Mateo slowly lowered the radio.
"Read that again."
Daniel's voice crackled through the speaker.
"The visitor log shows a private appointment yesterday afternoon."
"The visitor identified himself only as Lucas."
"He was personally authorized by Samuel Rivera."
Richard sank into a nearby chair.
"I don't believe this."
Lawson folded his arms.
"If that's really him, why appear now after all these years?"
Mateo looked at the faded family photograph still resting on the desk.
"Because something changed."
Elena glanced toward the original trust.
"Sofia."
Mateo nodded.
"Everything started moving once her existence could no longer stay hidden."
Richard looked at the documents scattered across the table.
"If Lucas is alive, then Samuel has been protecting a secret for decades."
"Or controlling one."
Elena corrected quietly.
Isabel stepped closer to the old bookshelf.
"I knew Samuel was hiding financial records."
"I never imagined he was hiding a person."
Mateo opened the visitor report Daniel had transmitted to his tablet.
Only a handful of details appeared.
Visitor Name: Lucas.
Time Entered: 2:14 p.m.
Time Exited: Not Recorded.
Mateo frowned.
"There isn't an exit time."
Lawson looked over his shoulder.
"That usually means one of two things."
"The system failed..."
"...or the visitor never officially left."
Silence settled over the archive once again.
Richard looked toward the hidden passage Owen had escaped through.
"Could there be another way out of this place?"
Lawson scanned the walls with his flashlight.
"If there is, it was designed decades ago."
Mateo examined the old journal more carefully.
Several pages near the middle had been folded repeatedly.
One paragraph had been underlined in blue ink.
He began reading aloud.
"The safest place is never the strongest vault."
"It is the room no one remembers exists."
Beneath the paragraph was a rough hand-drawn sketch.
Not of the archive.
Of another room.
Elena leaned closer.
"That's another level."
Richard nodded slowly.
"My God..."
"There was a second archive."
Mateo looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I knew rumors."
"I thought they were myths."
"What kind of myths?"
Richard pointed toward the drawing.
"The Founder's Room preserved the company's history."
"But according to old directors..."
"...there was another chamber beneath it."
"What was kept there?"
Richard swallowed.
"Personal letters."
"Private family agreements."
"And wills that were never registered."
Lawson looked around.
"So where is it?"
Richard studied the sketch.
"The entrance should be..."
He stopped.
His eyes settled on the enormous oak desk in the center of the room.
Mateo followed his gaze.
"The desk."
Together, Lawson and Mateo pushed the heavy furniture aside.
The wooden floor beneath it looked different from the surrounding stone.
A brass ring was embedded in the center.
Lawson hooked two fingers through it.
He pulled.
The hidden panel resisted at first.
Then slowly lifted.
Cold air rose from below.
A narrow iron ladder disappeared into darkness.
Elena looked down.
"How deep does it go?"
Richard shook his head.
"No one knows."
Daniel's voice interrupted through the radio again.
"Mateo."
"I'm here."
"I've received another report."
"What happened?"
"The investigators recovered surveillance footage from a nearby building."
"Can you identify Lucas?"
"No."
"The camera never captured his face."
"What did it capture?"
Daniel paused.
"It captured Samuel."
Mateo frowned.
"Doing what?"
"Meeting Lucas outside headquarters."
"And then..."
"...Samuel hugged him."
Silence followed.
Elena looked at Mateo.
"That doesn't sound like two enemies."
"It sounds like family."
Richard whispered.
Mateo nodded slowly.
"Which means Samuel wasn't hiding from Lucas."
"He was waiting for him."
Lawson climbed halfway down the ladder.
"It's clear."
"I'm going first."
Mateo looked toward Elena.
"Stay close."
The descent was slow.
The iron rungs groaned beneath their weight.
After nearly twenty feet, the ladder ended in another stone chamber.
This room was much smaller.
Unlike the archive above, it contained no shelves.
Only a single table.
A wooden chair.
And one locked steel box.
Dust covered everything.
Except the box.
Someone had opened it recently.
Mateo knelt beside it.
The lock had already been broken.
Inside were only two items.
A leather notebook.
And a sealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.
To Mateo.
His heartbeat quickened.
He carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Samuel.
Not from his father.
It was signed by a name he had never expected to read.
Lucas Rivera.
Mateo unfolded the pages.
The handwriting was steady.
He began reading aloud.
"If this letter has reached you, then Samuel has failed."
Everyone listened in silence.
"Do not mistake me for an innocent man."
"I have made choices I regret."
"But there is one lie I can no longer allow to survive."
Mateo continued.
"Your father did not lose me."
"He spent his entire adult life searching for me."
Richard closed his eyes.
"So Gabriel knew..."
Mateo read on.
"The greatest deception was never Elena."
"Never Sofia."
"Never the company."
"It was the story our family told itself."
Elena stepped closer.
"What story?"
Mateo turned the page.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"
He looked up slowly.
"My grandfather never erased Lucas."
Richard frowned.
"Then who did?"
Mateo read the next sentence.
"Samuel did not remove my name to gain power."
"He removed it because someone far more powerful ordered him to."
The room fell silent.
Lawson spoke first.
"Who could have ordered Samuel Rivera?"
Mateo turned the final page.
Only one sentence remained.
Written larger than the rest.
Find the woman called Evelyn Ashford. She knows who truly owns the Rivera legacy.
The letter ended there.
No explanation.
No address.
Only a signature.
— Lucas
Before anyone could speak, Daniel's voice burst through the radio.
"Mateo!"
His tone had changed completely.
"What happened?"
"You need to come upstairs."
"Now."
Mateo's pulse quickened.
"Is Sofia safe?"
There was a long pause.
Then Daniel answered.
"She's safe."
"But there's someone here insisting on seeing her."
"Who?"
May you like
Daniel took a slow breath.
"He says he's Lucas Rivera."
