Chapter 2 - The Girl in the Elevator

"SOFIA!"

Elena's scream echoed through the kitchen.

She rushed toward the elevator before anyone could stop her.

The man carrying the little girl immediately lowered her into Elena's arms.

"I found her near the freight entrance," he said breathlessly.

"Someone locked her inside a storage room."

Mateo was already beside them.

His heartbeat pounded louder than the alarms beginning to sound throughout the hotel.

"Sofia."

He spoke the name carefully.

As though saying it too loudly might frighten her.

The little girl couldn't have been more than twelve.

Dark brown hair spilled over Elena's arm.

A small bruise was forming near her temple.

Her white banquet dress was wrinkled and stained with dust.

She slowly opened her eyes.

"Mom..."

"I'm here."

Elena held her tightly.

"I'm right here."

Sofia winced.

"My head hurts."

Mateo immediately removed his suit jacket and folded it beneath the girl's head.

"Call an ambulance."

His voice carried across the kitchen.

"Now."

Several employees reached for their phones.

Valeria quietly stepped backward.

No one noticed except Mateo.

His eyes never left her.

"Don't move."

The command froze her in place.

"You don't have the right to order me."

Mateo answered without emotion.

"I own this hotel."

"I own this company."

"And before this night is over..."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"I may discover I never knew the woman standing in front of me."

Valeria swallowed.

For the first time in years, she had no answer.

Sofia looked at Mateo.

Her frightened eyes studied his face.

She frowned.

"Mom..."

Elena brushed hair away from her daughter's forehead.

"What is it?"

"The man in the picture."

Everyone became silent.

"The picture you keep in the drawer."

She pointed weakly toward Mateo.

"He looks just like him."

Elena closed her eyes.

She had always known this moment would come.

She simply never imagined it would happen like this.

Mateo slowly knelt beside Sofia.

"I'm Mateo."

Sofia stared at him.

"I know."

Mateo blinked.

"You do?"

She nodded.

"I found your picture years ago."

"I asked Mom who you were."

"What did she tell you?"

Elena looked down.

Sofia answered for her.

"She said you were someone who deserved the truth."

"But it wasn't safe."

Mateo felt every word like a knife.

He looked toward Elena.

"You never hated me."

She shook her head.

"Never."

"You believed I abandoned you."

"I believed what someone wanted us both to believe."

Their eyes met.

Twelve years of unanswered questions disappeared inside one painful moment.

Behind them, paramedics entered the kitchen.

They quickly examined Sofia.

"No concussion."

"Minor bruising."

"Signs of dehydration."

One medic looked toward Mateo.

"She'll recover."

Relief washed over Elena.

For only a second.

Because another realization struck her.

"Where's Isabel?"

Sofia looked confused.

"The housekeeper."

"The one who hid me."

"I don't know."

Elena's expression changed.

"She stayed with you."

Sofia nodded.

"She told me to stay quiet."

"There were men outside."

"They were looking for me."

Mateo turned toward the security chief.

"Find every surveillance recording."

"I want every hallway."

"Every entrance."

"Every elevator."

The chief hesitated.

"There may be a problem."

"What problem?"

"The cameras covering the employee corridors..."

He glanced nervously toward Valeria.

"They were disabled."

Mateo's voice hardened.

"When?"

"This afternoon."

"By whose order?"

Silence.

Mateo repeated himself.

"Answer me."

The security chief lowered his head.

"Ms. Valeria Laurent."

Every employee in the kitchen turned toward her.

Valeria forced a smile.

"It was a private charity event."

"I requested additional privacy."

Mateo laughed quietly.

There was no humor in the sound.

"You disabled security."

"The same day Elena was assaulted."

"The same day my daughter disappeared."

"You expect me to believe that's a coincidence?"

Valeria remained silent.

Mateo removed his phone.

He pressed one number.

The call connected immediately.

"Daniel."

"Sir."

"I want a complete forensic audit."

"Tonight."

"Freeze every Rivera Global account requiring my signature."

Daniel hesitated.

"Even executive accounts?"

"Especially executive accounts."

Valeria's face turned white.

"You can't do that."

Mateo ignored her.

"Lock every company property."

"No one accesses financial records."

"No one leaves with a single file."

"Understood."

The call ended.

Valeria stepped closer.

"Mateo."

"You are making a terrible mistake."

He finally looked at her.

"No."

"My mistake began twelve years ago."

"It ends tonight."

She reached for his hand.

He stepped away.

The rejection was public.

Final.

Irreversible.

Across the kitchen, Sofia quietly watched everything.

She tugged gently on Elena's sleeve.

"Mom."

"I'm scared."

Elena hugged her again.

"I know."

"We're safe now."

A small voice interrupted them.

"Are we?"

Everyone turned.

It was one of the young pastry assistants.

She looked terrified.

"I saw two men leave through the loading dock."

"They weren't hotel employees."

"They had guns."

The room instantly became tense.

Mateo's security team reacted without hesitation.

Several agents rushed toward the exits.

Others surrounded Elena and Sofia.

Mateo's instincts returned.

The instincts he had buried beneath years of boardrooms and business deals.

Someone had planned this.

This wasn't an accident.

Someone wanted Sofia.

A security officer ran back into the kitchen.

"Mr. Rivera!"

"What?"

"The loading dock."

"They're gone."

"But..."

He held up a black phone.

"We found this."

Elena recognized it immediately.

"It's Isabel's."

Mateo took the phone.

The screen was cracked.

One new voicemail remained unread.

Recorded eleven minutes earlier.

He pressed play.

Heavy breathing filled the speaker.

Then Isabel whispered.

"If you're hearing this..."

"They found us."

"I'm taking Sofia to the hotel."

"Don't trust anyone wearing Rivera security badges."

"There are people working inside the company."

"They've been helping Valeria for years."

A loud crash interrupted the recording.

Someone shouted.

Then Isabel screamed.

The message ended.

The kitchen fell silent.

Mateo slowly lowered the phone.

Someone inside his own company had betrayed him.

Someone powerful.

Someone who had helped hide Elena.

Helped hunt Sofia.

And possibly murdered anyone who stood in the way.

He turned toward Daniel, who had just entered with additional security.

"Seal every exit."

"No employee leaves."

"I want everyone's identity verified."

Daniel nodded.

"Already done."

"But..."

"What?"

"We're missing one executive."

Mateo frowned.

"Who?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Chief Financial Officer Adrian Wells."

Valeria's breathing stopped.

Mateo noticed.

"You know where he is."

"I don't."

"You hesitated."

"I was surprised."

"No."

Mateo stepped closer.

"You were afraid."

At that exact moment, every phone inside the kitchen vibrated simultaneously.

A company-wide emergency notification appeared across every screen.

URGENT BOARD NOTICE

CEO AUTHORITY SUSPENDED.

Effective Immediately.

Emergency Leadership Vote Initiated.

The message listed only one acting executive.

Interim Chair: Adrian Wells.

Mateo stared at the screen.

Then he slowly looked toward Valeria.

She wasn't surprised.

She was smiling.

Very slightly.

But enough.

Mateo understood.

The attack on Elena.

The missing cameras.

Sofia's kidnapping.

The disabled security system.

The financial freeze.

The emergency board vote.

None of it had happened by chance.

This had never been about revenge alone.
