Chapter 7 - The Man Who Never Panicked

Samuel Rivera did not move.
Not immediately.
The announcement about the federal investigators seemed to freeze the entire boardroom.
Several directors instinctively reached for their phones.
Others exchanged nervous glances.
Only Samuel remained perfectly still.
Then, almost imperceptibly, he smiled again.
Mateo noticed.
"You've been expecting them."
Samuel straightened the cuffs of his tailored suit.
"I've spent forty years in business."
"I expect everything."
The lead company attorney hurried toward the security officer.
"How many investigators?"
"Eight."
"They're requesting immediate access to executive records."
"And?"
"They also have a preservation order."
No document could legally be destroyed.
No server could be wiped.
No archive could be removed.
Richard slowly leaned back into his chair.
"This just became a criminal matter."
Samuel looked around the table.
"No."
"It became political."
Mateo stepped closer.
"You're still trying to control the narrative."
Samuel met his eyes.
"Control is the only reason companies survive."
Daniel slid another folder across the conference table.
"The forensic team finished a second review."
Mateo opened it.
The first page contained a list of properties.
Private clinics.
Consulting firms.
Holding companies.
Security contractors.
Every entity connected to the unauthorized transfers formed a web.
At the center of that web sat a single foundation.
Rivera Legacy Trust.
Mateo frowned.
"My father's trust?"
Daniel nodded.
"The shell companies were funded through loans backed by trust assets."
Richard looked horrified.
"That should have been impossible."
Samuel answered calmly.
"Nothing is impossible when you understand the documents."
Elena had remained silent for several minutes.
Now she stepped forward.
"You keep talking about assets."
"You keep talking about companies."
She looked directly at Samuel.
"You never speak about people."
Samuel regarded her without emotion.
"I learned long ago that emotions cloud judgment."
Elena folded her arms.
"And that's why you erased my life?"
Samuel did not answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at every director around the table.
"When Mateo met Elena, Rivera Global was negotiating the largest merger in its history."
"He was young."
"Inexperienced."
"In love."
Mateo interrupted.
"So you decided my future for me."
"I decided the company's future."
Samuel replied.
"The two were inseparable."
Richard shook his head.
"Even if that were true..."
"You had no authority to interfere with his personal life."
Samuel's expression remained composed.
"I never claimed authority."
"I accepted responsibility."
The room fell silent again.
Mateo understood something.
Samuel genuinely believed he had done the right thing.
That realization was more disturbing than any confession.
A knock interrupted the discussion.
The boardroom doors opened.
Two federal agents entered with company counsel.
One agent displayed official identification.
"We're here to execute a federal search warrant."
The lead attorney nodded politely.
"We'll cooperate fully."
The agent scanned the room.
"Who is Samuel Rivera?"
Samuel stepped forward.
"I am."
"We'll need access to your office and electronic devices."
Samuel handed over his phone without hesitation.
The agent accepted it.
"Thank you."
His cooperation surprised everyone.
Even Mateo.
As the agents turned to leave, Samuel spoke.
"You won't find what you're looking for."
The lead agent paused.
"We'll determine that."
The doors closed once more.
Daniel leaned toward Mateo.
"He's too calm."
Mateo nodded.
"He already moved something."
Lawson entered a moment later.
"We searched Samuel's executive office."
"And?"
"It was almost empty."
"What do you mean?"
"Personal photographs are gone."
"Paper files are gone."
"Even the safe has been cleared."
Samuel smiled faintly.
"I prefer a clean workspace."
Mateo looked at him.
"When did you remove everything?"
Samuel didn't answer.
Instead, Isabel suddenly spoke.
"The library."
Everyone turned toward her.
Samuel's expression changed for the first time.
Only slightly.
But Elena caught it.
"What library?"
Mateo asked.
Isabel looked directly at him.
"Your grandfather's private archive."
"I thought it was sealed."
"It was."
She nodded.
"But Samuel never stopped using it."
Richard frowned.
"There's no executive archive beneath headquarters."
"There is."
Samuel replied quietly.
"It simply isn't on any modern blueprint."
Daniel looked at Mateo.
"I've never heard of it."
"My father mentioned it once."
Mateo said slowly.
"He called it the Founder's Room."
Samuel's smile disappeared.
"You should have left old stories buried."
Mateo understood immediately.
"There are records down there."
Samuel remained silent.
"Original records."
Elena added.
"Records no one altered."
Isabel nodded.
"I hid copies there."
Samuel took one step toward her.
"You shouldn't have said that."
Lawson instantly moved between them.
"No one is threatening witnesses tonight."
The room's atmosphere shifted again.
This was no longer only about financial fraud.
Now there might be original evidence hidden somewhere inside the building itself.
Mateo looked toward Daniel.
"Can we access the archive?"
Daniel hesitated.
"If it still exists."
Samuel finally laughed.
A genuine laugh.
"You think you'll simply walk downstairs and uncover decades of secrets?"
Mateo answered calmly.
"I think you're worried we might."
Samuel looked out through the glass wall overlooking the city.
"You know what your father once told me?"
No one replied.
"He said buildings remember."
Samuel turned back.
"So do families."
He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
Lawson instantly drew his weapon.
"Hands where I can see them."
Samuel slowly removed...
...an old brass key.
It was worn smooth with age.
A single engraved letter rested on its head.
R.
Samuel held it up.
"The Founder's Room."
"The last original archive."
"The place where every Rivera secret began."
He looked at Mateo.
"You want the truth?"
He gently placed the key on the boardroom table.
"Then come and find it."
Before anyone could react, every light in the executive floor suddenly went dark.
The room plunged into silence.
Emergency lighting flickered on.
A building-wide alarm began to sound.
Daniel looked at his phone.
"The main power just failed."
Lawson spoke into his radio.
"Report."
Static.
Only static.
Then, from somewhere deep beneath headquarters...
A single explosion echoed through the building.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
The boardroom shook.
Samuel closed his eyes.
Almost peacefully.
May you like
Then he whispered four words that chilled everyone in the room.
"Someone got there first."
