Chapter 6 - The Vote That Changed Everything

The boardroom doors closed with a heavy thud.

The sound echoed through the executive floor.

No one spoke.

Eleven board members sat around the polished walnut table.

Some avoided Mateo's eyes.

Others watched him with carefully rehearsed expressions.

Samuel Rivera remained standing at the head of the room.

His confidence filled the silence.

"Thank you for coming, Mateo."

"It saves us all a great deal of time."

Mateo ignored the invitation to sit.

His attention settled on Isabel.

She looked exhausted.

A bruise darkened her cheek.

But when she saw Elena, tears welled in her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Her voice cracked.

"I should have told you everything years ago."

Elena took a step forward.

"You kept us alive."

"I helped create the nightmare first."

Isabel lowered her head.

"I've carried that guilt every day."

Samuel sighed impatiently.

"This reunion is touching."

"But Rivera Global has more pressing matters."

He nodded toward the legal counsel seated beside him.

The attorney stood.

"As acting chair, Mr. Samuel Rivera has called an emergency vote regarding permanent executive leadership."

Mateo finally spoke.

"Before a vote begins, I'd like the minutes to reflect that a principal witness in an active criminal investigation is being unlawfully restrained in this room."

Several board members shifted uneasily.

The company attorney hesitated.

Samuel smiled.

"Release her."

Marcus immediately stepped back.

He removed the restraints from Isabel's wrists.

She rubbed them slowly.

Samuel spread his hands.

"There."

"No one is being held."

Mateo noticed something important.

Samuel had complied immediately.

Not out of kindness.

Out of calculation.

He wanted every action in the room to appear legal.

Mateo looked around the table.

"How many of you know why I'm actually here tonight?"

No one answered.

"You've been told I'm emotionally unstable."

Silence.

"You've been told I endangered the company."

Still nothing.

"You've also been told nothing about attempted fraud, falsified records, or an ongoing criminal investigation."

A woman near the end of the table slowly raised her hand.

She was one of the newest directors.

"I wasn't informed of any criminal investigation."

Neither were several others.

Mateo saw confusion spreading.

Samuel noticed it too.

"The CEO is attempting to distract the board."

"No."

Mateo calmly placed the memory card on the table.

"I'm giving them context."

Samuel's eyes briefly rested on the card.

Only for a second.

But Mateo caught it.

"You've already watched the recording."

Samuel said.

"I have."

"And yet you're showing remarkable restraint."

"I learned something from you."

Samuel smiled.

"What is that?"

"People who rush usually lose."

A faint murmur moved around the room.

Samuel's smile faded.

Mateo turned toward the directors.

"I won't ask you to believe me."

"I'll ask you to ask questions."

He looked directly at one longtime board member.

"Richard."

"You've known my family for thirty years."

Richard nodded slowly.

"When was the emergency vote scheduled?"

Richard checked the printed agenda.

"This afternoon."

"And Adrian Wells?"

"He requested it."

Mateo continued.

"When did Adrian begin acting independently of me?"

Richard frowned.

"I... don't know."

"Exactly."

Mateo walked slowly around the table.

"Someone convinced this board to replace its CEO within hours."

"Someone leaked stories to the media before any investigation concluded."

"Someone decided speed mattered more than facts."

Several directors exchanged uncertain glances.

Samuel folded his hands behind his back.

"Facts are exactly why we're here."

"Then let's discuss one."

Mateo stopped.

"My father amended the Rivera family trust before his death."

The room became noticeably quieter.

Samuel did not react.

Mateo noticed.

"You all knew."

No one answered.

The silence was answer enough.

Elena looked from one face to another.

"They knew about Sofia."

One older director finally spoke.

"We knew there could be... another beneficiary."

Mateo stared at him.

"You never told me."

"We were legally prohibited."

"By whom?"

The director looked toward Samuel.

Every eye in the room followed.

Samuel remained perfectly composed.

"The trust required confidentiality."

Mateo laughed quietly.

"My father trusted the board."

"He didn't appoint you to hide my own child."

Samuel stepped closer.

"Your father believed the Rivera legacy required stability."

"And you decided what stability meant."

Samuel met his gaze.

"I protected this company."

"You protected your influence."

For the first time, several directors nodded almost imperceptibly.

The balance inside the room was beginning to change.

Isabel slowly stood.

"I have something to say."

Samuel looked at her.

"You should think carefully."

"I've done nothing except think for twelve years."

She faced the board.

"I worked at the private clinic."

"I falsified records."

"I followed orders because I was afraid."

Her voice shook.

"I will answer for that."

"But Elena never abandoned Mateo."

"She never surrendered her child."

"She never signed a single document willingly."

Every word landed heavily.

One attorney immediately began taking notes.

Another whispered to the company's general counsel.

Samuel interrupted.

"Can you prove any of this?"

Isabel reached into her coat pocket.

"I can."

She placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Old appointment logs.

Copies of nursing schedules.

And one folded letter.

Elena recognized the handwriting instantly.

"My letter."

She whispered.

"The first letter I wrote to Mateo."

Mateo carefully unfolded it.

The paper had yellowed with age.

His hands trembled.

He began reading silently.

Then stopped halfway through.

His eyes filled with emotion.

"I never received this."

Elena nodded.

"I know."

Samuel remained expressionless.

"A letter proves very little."

"No."

Mateo folded it carefully.

"But it proves someone intercepted it."

He turned toward the board.

"Ask yourselves why."

No one answered immediately.

Instead, the directors looked at Samuel.

Not with confidence.

With uncertainty.

The shift was subtle.

But it was real.

Daniel quietly entered the boardroom.

He walked directly to Mateo.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"The independent forensic team has finished its preliminary review."

Mateo looked at him.

"And?"

"They found unauthorized transfers."

Samuel's expression remained calm.

Daniel continued.

"Over the last twelve years."

"More than ninety million dollars moved through shell companies connected to Laurent Advisory Group."

Several directors gasped.

Daniel placed printed reports on the table.

"The transfers were approved electronically."

"Using executive override authority."

Richard looked stunned.

"Only two people had that authority."

Mateo nodded.

"And one of them is sitting in this room."

Every eye turned toward Samuel Rivera.

Samuel did not flinch.

Instead...

He slowly smiled.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Mateo frowned.

"You expected this."

"I expected you."

Samuel walked toward the panoramic windows overlooking the city.

"The money exists."

"The companies exist."

"I approved every transfer."

Shock spread across the room.

Richard stood.

"Samuel..."

"What have you done?"

Samuel turned back.

"I invested."

"You stole."

Mateo corrected.

"I preserved."

Samuel replied calmly.

"For whom?"

"For Rivera Global."

Mateo shook his head.

"No."

"For yourself."

Before Samuel could answer, the boardroom doors opened again.

A security officer hurried inside.

"Mr. Rivera."

He looked at Mateo.

"There are federal investigators in the lobby."

"They have search warrants."

The room fell silent.

The officer swallowed.

"They're asking for all financial records..."

He looked directly at Samuel.

"...including documents bearing your authorization."

May you like

For the first time that night...

Samuel Rivera stopped smiling.
