Chapter 9 - The Broken Foundation

Evelyn refused the plea deal.
Her vanity would not allow her to admit guilt in a court of law.
Three weeks later, the trial began at the central county courthouse.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious citizens.
Maya took the witness stand on the second day.
She wore a modest cream-colored dress, her posture firm as she looked directly at the jury.
"Can you describe what happened when the defendant entered the nursery?" D.A. Sarah Miller asked.
"She came in while I was attempting to comfort Oliver," Maya testified clearly.
"He was having a severe asthma attack brought on by a sudden fever."
"When I reached for his inhaler on the changing table, she stepped between us."
"She picked up the inhaler, put it in her purse, and told me that I was unfit to care for a child."
"And then what happened?" Miller asked.
"I tried to grab the purse," Maya continued, her voice remaining steady.
"She slapped me across the face and shoved me against the crib."
"She said that once Ryan saw the state of the room, he would hand Oliver over to her."
Vance stood up for cross-examination, attempting to pick apart Maya's testimony.
"Mrs. Whitmore, isn't it true that you were under extreme emotional stress due to your child's illness?"
"Yes," Maya replied directly.
"And isn't it true that you panicked and knocked over the table lamp yourself?"
"No," Maya answered calmly.
"And you don't have to take my word for it, Mr. Vance."
"Your client recorded the whole thing."

A subtle murmur broke out through the gallery.
Vance paused, realizing he had walked into a trap, and sat down without asking another question.
