Chapter 6 - The Visitor in the Dark

That evening, as rain slicked the streets outside the hospital, Maya fell asleep in the chair beside Oliver's bed.

The boy was sleeping peacefully, his chest rising and falling rhythmically with the aid of a mild oxygen tube.

Ryan stood near the window, watching the city lights reflect off the wet glass.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Ryan turned, expecting a night nurse.

Instead, a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped into the room.

It was Julian Whitmore, Ryan's estranged uncle who had vanished from the family business ten years prior after a bitter fallout with Evelyn.

"You shouldn't be here, Julian," Ryan said softly, stepping between the man and the bed.

"I heard about what happened," Julian said, his voice low and gravelly.

"I came to give you something you're going to need."

Julian pulled an old silver memory key from his coat pocket and held it out.

"What is this?" Ryan asked without taking it.

"That contains the financial records from ten years ago," Julian said.

"The reason I left wasn't because I lost money in the market, Ryan."

"It was because I discovered what your mother did to your father before he died."

Ryan froze.

"My father died of a heart attack."

"That's what the death certificate said," Julian replied grimly.

"Because Evelyn paid the coroner to sign it."

"Look at the files on that drive, Ryan."

"She didn't just target Maya."

"Destroying anyone who threatens her absolute control is the only way she knows how to live."
